Hoosiers Drop Match at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Senior Amelia Anderson led the Hoosiers with 15 kills, but the Indiana volleyball team fell in three sets (25-22, 25-15, 25-20) Saturday at Purdue.
Anderson, who ranks 18th on the Hoosiers all-time list for career kills crept closer to the 1,000 mark and now has 986 for her career.
After falling behind 15-10 in the opening set, the Hoosiers (12-6, 2-4) scored three points in a row on two Anderson kills and a Purdue attack error. The Hoosiers would eventually claw their way back and tied the set 20-20 on a kill by senior middle blocker Awele Nwaeze.
A Purdue kill and three attack errors by Indiana gave Purdue a match point and although the Hoosiers got back-to-back kills to keep them alive, Purdue took the first set, 25-22.
In set two neither team led by more then one point until Purdue got a kill from Annie Drews, who had 17 in the match and an Indiana error put Purdue up 10-8.
The Hoosiers kept within two at 12-10 on a kill by Anderson, but the Boilermakers used a 6-2 spurt to open it up at 18-12. From there Purdue scored seven of the next 10 points to take set two, 25-15.
After two sets Purdue had an attack percentage over .500, but in set three the Hoosiers forced the Boilermakers into eight errors and dropped their set two percentage to .186. The Hoosiers made seven errors of their own in the set two and despite bringing a seven point deficit down to three with a late rally, the Hoosiers dropped set three, 25-20 to end the match.
Up next the Hoosiers travel to the east coast to take on Penn State on Friday Oct. 16 and travel to Columbus to a matchup with Ohio State on Sunday Oct. 18.
