SPARRING WITH THE SPARTANS
Michigan State is currently in ninth place in the Big Ten with a 3-4-2 conference record. Wins for the Spartans in Big Ten play include Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota. Most recently, MSU dropped a 1-0 decision to Maryland on Wednesday afternoon in College Park. Lexy Warner leads the way for the Spartans with three goals on the year and four assists. Jamie Cheslik has also tallied four assists to go with her two goals. In total, five players have scored at least twice with five others registering one goal. In the net, Gabrielle Gauruder has logged all the minutes for MSU this season, registering 75 saves while surrendering just 12 goals and earning a 0.71 goals against average.
The Hoosiers own a 15-6-2 edge in the series matchup, including three consecutive victories. Last season, Indiana earned a 2-0 victory in Bloomington in the final game of the season. Then-freshman Kayla Smith scored the game-winner for the Hoosiers in the 27th minute while goalkeeper Sarah Stone recorded three saves in the shutout win.
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana faced off against Maryland and Ohio State last weekend at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Thursday's game against the Terrapins ended in a 1-1 stalemate as both teams' goals came on first half penalty kicks. Sophomore Annelie Leitner converted the Hoosiers' opportunity for her first goal of the season. Sunday's game saw senior Jessie Bujouves knock in her third goal of the year on an equalizer in the 50th minute off the first career assist from freshman Justine Lynn. However, the Buckeyes scored the game-winner in the 85th minute to earn a 2-1 victory.
STONE'S CAREER YEAR
Goalkeeper Sarah Stone has registered a career-high six shutouts this season, bringing her career total to 14, just one behind the Indiana program record (15 by Ashley Davis, 1996-99). In addition, the redshirt senior has recorded 192 career saves, which ranks fourth in IU program history. Stone is currently second in the conference with 84 saves on the year.
FRESHMEN MAKING BIG IMPACT
The Hoosiers have relied heavily on its freshmen class this season, with six making at least one start while logging significant minutes. Three freshmen - Cassidy Blacha, Hanna Johnson and Maya Piper - have netted a goal for Indiana while Caroline Dreher and Lynn have each tallied an assist. Lynn, who missed the first 10 games of the season due to injury, made her season debut against Wisconsin on Sept. 25 and has since started every game.
PUTTING IN OVERTIME
To this point, Indiana has played in seven overtime contests this season, which is the most since the 2007 team played in eight. Six of Indiana's OT games have resulted in ties, while a sixth resulted in a 1-0 victory against Baylor in the first OT period on Aug. 30. Indiana's six ties this season are the most since the 1999 team also registered six. The Hoosiers have had six of eight home games result in double overtime ties.
