EAST LANSING, Mich. – In a game featuring three first-half penalty kicks, the Indiana Women's Soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Michigan State in the final road game of the year on Sunday afternoon.
"Unfortunately we've been on the side of a couple bad breaks," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "But we're a strong team and we're a close-knit group. At the end of the day, the scoreboard is what counts but I really think we're progressing as a group."
Michigan State earned a pair of penalty kicks in the first 18 minutes of action before IU was awarded one in the 26th minute.
Mary Kathryn Fiebernitz converted both opportunities for the Spartans, the first coming in 13th minute after Jamie Cheslik was tripped up in the box. Five minutes later, Fiebernitz made it 2-0 in favor of the Spartans.
Indiana struck back in the 26th minute off the foot of senior Jessie Bujouves, who converted the penalty kick after an MSU defender was called for a handball in the box. The goal was the fourth of the season for the midfielder and her second in as many games.
Freshman Maya Piper threatened to tie up the game in the 32nd minute after her on-goal shot resulted in an Indiana corner. Piper got another good look from the corner, but her header was again saved by goalkeeper Gabrielle Gauruder.
Hoosier goalkeeper Sarah Stone registered four saves in the first half and finished the game with seven. Two of her stops came in the early going of the second half as Allyson Krause put up two shots on target in the 56th and 58th minute.
Indiana earned more possession time in the second half as the Hoosiers saw numerous good opportunities in the attacking third. Freshman Cassidy Blacha fired off a pair of shots in the first five minutes, but both were off target. In the 67th minute, the Hoosiers were awarded a free kick from 20 yards out, resulting in a good-looking shot from Bujouves that went just high of the crossbar.
The Spartans added their third goal of the game on a wild shot in the 82nd minute by Kirsten Evans. After Evans took the corner for Michigan State and sent the ball into the box, the ball curved and entered the goal by the near post.
The Hoosiers close out the season on Wednesday as they host Purdue in the Golden Boot game. In addition, seven Indiana players will be recognized as part of Senior Night festivities.
"We haven't been home against Purdue since 2012," said Berbary. "We're really excited to have them on our home field and celebrate our seniors and their great careers. It's going to be an emotional game, it's such a good rivalry and everyone's looking forward to it."
