BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Led by senior Camille Chevalier's opening round 67, the Indiana women's golf team is in 14th place out of 19 teams at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown with a team score of 285 (-1). The tournament is being held at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada.
Chevalier's first round score of 67 (-5) is the lowest round by an IU women's golfer since Jacqueline Yanch's final round 67 at the Challenge at Onion Creek in November 2009. It also matches the lowest single round in school history, and Yanch, Anita Gahir (2008) and Jennifer Gray (1998) are the only other Hoosiers to shoot 67 in a tournament. For Chevalier, in her last 27 holes dating back to last weekend in Louisville, she is 8-under par with nine birdies, one bogey and 17 pars.
She began her round on the 11th hole and alternated birdie and bogey over the first five holes, leaving her at 1-under par in that span. She would birdie the 18th to get to 2-under par before carding three birdies and six pars on the front nine to post 5-under par and a tie for third place on the individual leaderboard of the tournament.
The team score of 285 is the lowest team score since a 285 in the second round of the IU Fall Invitational at Belterra Resort in Florence, Ind., on Oct. 13, 2012. The Hoosiers would go on to post a second place finish as a team in that tournament.
Pear Siriko opened this week with a 1-under par round of 71, a new career-best round for the junior from Thailand. She started the round with a birdie on her first hole and offset a bogey on 15 with a birdie on 18. After starting the front nine with three bogeys in the first four holes – with a birdie mixed in – she registered a birdie on the sixth hole and her final hole of the day – No. 12 – to finish with 71.
Freshman Erin Harper was able to rebound after a tough stretch of holes in the middle of her round to post a 1-over par score of 73. She was one under after her first seven holes after starting on the 12th hole. But a double bogey on the first hole and a bogey on the third hole had her at 2-over par for the round. But she finished the front nine with a pair of birdies to get back to even par before a bogey on the ninth hole left her at 1-over par.
Eva Domingo opened her day with a birdie on the 12th hole, a par three, and would go on to post birdies on the 17th and the eighth to go with 13 other pars. But that left two other holes where she got into trouble, carding a triple bogey on the 10th and a double bogey on the 14th hole derailed an otherwise steady round that finished at 2-over par 74.
The fifth person competing for Indiana is Ana Sanjuan, who registered a 3-over par round of 75 on Sunday.
The Hoosiers will be back in action on Monday, playing 18 holes for round two at Boulder Creek Golf Club. Live scoring can be found at birdiefire.com.
