Indiana continues their hot start to dual play, improves to 4-0
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana wrestling team followed Friday's upset against #20 Minnesota with two dual wins on Sunday at the University Gym. The Hoosiers opened the day with a hard-earned 25-9 win over Eastern Michigan, followed by a 56-0 shutout win against Manchester. In IU's dual against Manchester, five different Hoosiers won by pinfall.
"It was a good weekend," said head coach Duane Goldman. "They're getting better. They responded in a hard-fought dual against Eastern Michigan today. Their hard work is paying off, and the young talent that redshirted last season is starting to show."

The Hoosiers opened the afternoon slate with a dual against Eastern Michigan, a team on the brink of cracking the top 25. The Hoosiers and Eagles split the first six bouts, with Matt Irick, Elijah Oliver, and Alonzo Shepherd. Indiana held the lead, 12-9, with a crucial 149 lbs. match between Indiana's Luke Blanton and No. 17 Nicholas Barber of Eastern Michigan on the way. Blanton, riding the momentum of an upset over #10 Jake Short (Minnesota) on Friday, prevailed in a tight 4-0 decision.
"Luke had a great weekend. He beat two top 20 guys this weekend, and that should hopefully result in some national recognition," Goldman said. "Luke is a by-product of hard work and attitude. He's a great guy to have on the team in all aspects of collegiate athletics."
After Blanton's win, Indiana closed the dual with three more decision wins. No. 11 Nate Jackson concluded the dual with his sixth specialty win of the season, a 14-3 major decision against Jacob Davis.

Indiana brought the day's events to a close with their third dual of the weekend, a contest against the University of Manchester Spartans. The Hoosiers strung together a dominating performance, taking all ten weights in a 56-0 shutout.
Matt Irick (184) got things rolling for the Hoosiers with a 2:30 pin against Alex Roberts. Jake Masengale (197) followed that with another pin, this time in 1:54.
Garret Goldman (HWT) returned to a winning record with an 18-0 tech fall, his first of the season, against Manchester freshman Seth Meyer. Elijah Oliver (125) followed that with a pin in 28 seconds, the fastest pin by a Hoosier this season.
The Hoosiers earned back-to-back tech falls, courtesy of Alonzo Shepherd (133) and Cole Weaver (141). At 149 lbs., Trevor Moody battled for a major decision, and his first dual win of the season.
Bryce Martin (165) and No. 11 Nate Jackson (174) finished the dual with pins in 35 and 54 seconds, respectively. It's Indiana's first shutout win since 2014.
Indiana's coaching staff is proud of the effort the team gave in the three duals this weekend, but they don't want the Hoosiers to rest on their laurels.
"Even though they're getting better, there's a long way to go," Goldman said. "When you think you've done it all, you stop learning and you stop improving. We had a couple great wins this weekend, but it's just one weekend. We're in it for the long haul."
Indiana's top wrestlers are beginning to gain a bit of traction in the national rankings discussions, but the Hoosiers' secret to their success lies deeper in their bout card. Many of the guys that are turning the tide for Indiana don't receive much of the limelight.
"Alonzo is a great example of that, how he had a big win against Minnesota and a win today against an opponent that had previously beaten him." Goldman said. "The direction we're heading is really positive right now, but we have a long way to go. We have a lot of challenges ahead of us."
Up Next: Reno Tournament of Champions
Sunday, December 20 | All Day | Reno, Nev.
The Hoosiers punch their ticket for Reno next weekend when they'll take part in the 2015 Reno Tournament of Champions. Indiana will face top talent from a variety of regions, including five nationally ranked teams and Big Ten foe Illinois.
"These tournaments are opportunities for us to see good teams from other parts of the country, and hopefully get wins that are beneficial to our RPI. It's the last opportunity that we'll have this season to wrestle non-Big Ten schools and beat quality non-Big Ten opponents that will affect our RPI."
