PALM COAST, Fla. -- The Indiana men's golf team joined each of the other 13 Big Ten men's golf programs for the Big Ten Match Play Championship at Hammock Beach Resort. The two-day event started Sunday morning with the No. 12 seed Hoosiers taking on No. 5 seed Northwestern and then battling Penn State in the afternoon as part of the Round Robin bracket. Information on both matches is below:
Opening Round
Northwestern defeats Indiana, 3-1-1
Will Seger (IU) def. Sam Triplett (NW), 2&1
Charles Wang (NW) def. Brendon Doyle, 1up
Bennett Lavin (NW) vs. Max Kollin (IU), halved
Josh Jamieson (NW) def. Matt Weber (IU), 1up
Dylan Wu (NW) def. Nicholas Grubnich (IU), 4&2
In one of the most competitive matchups of the morning round, the Indiana Hoosiers were unable to close the deal down the stretch of a couple matches and suffered a 3-1-1 loss at the hands of the Northwestern Wildcats.
Sophomore Will Seger jumped out to a quick 2-up lead after two holes in his first match of the day, but Triplett ralled back to square the match through five holes. After Seger regained the lead on the seventh hole, Triplett won holes No. 11 and 12 to take his first lead of the day. But Seger responded in a big way, recording par on each of the next three holes to win each one and go on to win the match.
Freshman Brendon Doyle was 2 down after his first four holes, but won the next three to take the 1up lead and would extend that lead to 2up as he made the turn. The pairing would end up on the 16th tee with Doyle holding a 2up lead, but Northwestern's Charles Wang won each of the final three holes to defeat Doyle, 1up.
Max Kollin would also see his fate decided on the 18th hole, and he too would see a full point slip away after leading by a 2up margin through 13 holes. Both Kollin and Northwestern's Bennett Lavin won two holes on the front side and made the turn all square. Kollin would win holes 11 and 13 to take the 2up lead before Lavin rallied to win 16 and 18 to halve the match.
Matt Weber, another freshman, won his first hole of the day, but would make the turn trailing Northwestern's Josh Jamieson, 1up. Weber was able to square the match after winning the 13th hole with a par, but Jamieson would win the two of the next three and was able to hold off a late charge by Weber to defeat the Hoosier, 1up.
The fifth and final match was between Nicholas Grubnich and Northwestern's Dylan Wu. Grubnich birdied the second hole to take a 1up lead but would only go on to win two holes the rest of the way and lost, 4&2.
The loss dropped the Hoosiers out of the Championship and Consolation brackets and into the Round Robin Bracket for the remainder of the tournament.
Round Robin - Sunday Afternoon
Penn State defeats Indiana, 4-1-0
Keegan Vea (IU) def. Christian Elliot (PSU), 2up
Cole Miller (PSU) def. Will Seger (IU), 4&2
Cody Cox (PSU) def. Brendon Doyle (IU), 4&3
Jens Talbert (PSU) def. Max Kollin (IU), 4&3
JD Dornes (PSU) def. Matt Weber (IU), 1up
The first match of the round robin bracket for Indiana put them up against the Penn State Nittany Lions. While the final score showed Penn State with a 4-1-0 win over the Hoosiers, the matches were once again very tightly contested.
Sophomore Keegan Vea, who did not compete in the morning match, replaced Grubnich in the IU lineup. The shift in the lineup by head coach Mike Mayer paid dividends from the start, as Vea jumped out to the 3up lead through six holes and never looked back to claim the 2up victory over Penn State's Christian Elliot.
Seger fell behind early to Cole Miller, but was able to trim the deficit to just 1up afer eight holes. But Miller wont he ninth hole and would eventually close out Seger by winning three straight for the 4&2 win.
Doyle's match against PSU's Cody Cox started out slow before Doyle took the 1up lead on the seventh hole. Unfortunately for Indiana, that would be the final hole that would go in IU's favor and Doyle lost to Cox, 4&3.
Kollin would also lose by that same 4&3 score in his second match of the day.
Weber, who lost a tough match earlier in the day, battled PSU's JD Dornes to all square through the first nine holes and then took a 1up lead on the 10th hole. But Dornes
win the 11th hole as well as the 14th and was able to match Weber over the final four holes to hand Weber the 1up loss.
The Hoosiers will return to action on Monday against Michigan State in the morning followed by Nebraska in the afternoon to conclude the Big Ten Match Play Championship.
