PALM COAST, Fla. -- On day two of the Big Ten Match Play Championship at Hammock Beach Resort, the Indiana men's golf team went 1-1 on the day. The Hoosiers lost to Michigan State, 4-1, in the morning before logging a 2-1-2 win over Nebraska in the afternoon.
Information on both matches can be found below:
Round Robin - Monday Morning
Michigan State defeats Indiana, 4-1
Charlie Netzel (MSU) def. Keegan Vea (IU), 6&5
Sam Weatherhead (MSU) def. Will Seger (IU), 3&2
Max Kollin (IU) def. Jon Finley (MSU), 4&3
Mitch Rutledge (MSU) def. Matt Weber (IU), 2&1
Gareth Lappin (MSU) def. Nicholas Grubnich, 3&1
The pairing of Charlie Netzel (Michigan State) and Keegan Vea (Indiana) was a one-sided affair on the scorecard, with Vea winning one hole and Netzel claiming seven en route to a 6&5 win over Vea.
Will Seger was not able to get off to a good enough start in his match against Sam Weatherhead from Michigan State, as the Spartan held a 2up lead after three holes. The two would alternate winning holes over the middle of the round before Weatherhead was able to put a couple together and win the 16th hole to close out the 3&2 win.
In the third matchup, Indiana's Max Kollin used a couple of three-hole bursts to secure his 4&3 win over Jon Finley. Kollin won the second, third and fourth holes to take the early 3up lead. Finley would cut the Hoosiers lead to just 1up after the 11th hole but Kollin responded by winning 13, 14 and 15 to close out the win for IU.
Indiana's Matt Weber was in yet another tight match down the stretch, trailing Michigan State's Mitch Rutledge by a 1down margin with five holes remaining. The pair would halve the next three holes before Rutledge recorded a par on the 17th hole and Weber carded a bogey and lost 2&1.
The final match of the morning was IU senior Nicholas Grubnich against Gareth Lappin. The match was won on the front side by Lappin, as he won six holes of the first nine holes and went on to post a 3&1 win over Grubnich.
Round Robin - Monday Afternoon
Indiana defeats Nebraska, 2-1-2
Keegan Vea (IU) def. Aaron Wong (NEB), 1up
Brendon Doyle (IU) def. Justin Jennings (NEB), 3&2
Max Kollin (IU) vs. Mike Siwa (NEB), halved
Matt Weber (IU)
vs. Ross Dickson (NEB), halved
Josh Reinertson (NEB) def. Nicholas Grubnich, 2&1
Indiana was able to close out matches down the stretch and came away with a 2-1-2 win over Nebraska in the final match of the tournament for both teams. Keegan Vea and Brendon Doyle both carded wins for the Hoosiers while Max Kollin and Matt Weber both halved their matches.
After getting off to fast starts in his previous match, Vea saw himself in a 2down hole after four holes but was able to cut the deficit to just 1down as the pairing made the turn. He would go on to win four holes on the back side, including the decisive 17th hole, to complete the 1up victory.
Freshman Brendon Doyle won three holes on his first nine holes before winning five of the next six holes to close out the 3&2 win over Justin Jennings.
Kollin appeared to have his match in hand, holding a 3up lead with four holes remaining. But Nebraska's Mike Siwa won three straight holes to square the match and then both players bogeyed the final hole to halve the match.
Freshman Matt Weber also halved his match, but he took a much different route than Kollin. Through four holes, Weber was 2up but then lost the next four holes and was suddenly 2 down. He would win the ninth and 10 holes to even the match, only to see Ross Dickson win the next to and regain the lead. Weber fought back to win the 13th and 14th holes to bring the match to all square with four holes remaining. When Dickson won the 16th hole and then halved the 17th hole, Weber had to win the 18th hole to havle the match. And he did just that with a par while Dickson carded a bogey.
Senior Nicholas Grubnich played well enough to have the 1up lead after nine holes, but could not maintain that lead and would end up suffering a 2up loss to Josh Reinertson.
The Hoosiers will return to action on March 15-16 at the Talis Park Challenge in Naples, Fla.
