IOWA CITY, Iowa -- No. 19 Indiana dropped its third consecutive game Sunday at Iowa, 10-6, suffering its first series sweep since April 2013.
The Hoosiers tallied series highs in runs and hits after struggling offensively on Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately for Indiana, the Hawkeyes made the same claim.
Thirteen Big Ten series' separated the last time IU was on the wrong end of a series sweep dating back to April 12-14, 2014, when Michigan State bested the Hoosiers on three straight walk-offs.
Indiana got off to its best start of the weekend Sunday, taking its first lead of the series in the top half of the first inning, but every time the Hoosiers put something together offensively, Iowa responded immediately.
Following Craig Dedelow's first-inning single, Brad Hartong and Scott Donley recorded back-to-back RBI doubles to score a pair of runs for Indiana. Austin Cangelosi and Casey Rodrigue followed with a walk and a single, respectively, to load the bases, but Iowa closed the inning with a double play to limit the damage.
It didn't take long for the Haweyes to retaliate, scoring in the first inning for the third straight contest.
Iowa loaded the bases with three consecutive singles before scoring its first run on a HBP. Iowa continued with a 2-RBI double before a sacrifice fly marked Iowa's first out with a 4-2 lead. The Hawkeyes used an RBI single and a groundout RBI to take a 6-2 advantage into the second frame.
In the third inning, Indiana tacked on a run to make it 6-3 before Iowa again bested IU's effort with two runs to pull ahead, 8-3.
Four scoreless innings went by before the Hoosiers threatened with a five-hit, three-run frame in the eighth to close the gap to 8-6, aided by singles from Cangelosi, Donley, Hartong and Will Nolden, who was credited with two RBI on his base hit. Rodrigue also registered an RBI on a fielder's choice.
For the third time, Iowa responded, almost making up for the damage done with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Indiana returns to action Tuesday at Kentucky, which just won a weekend series vs. No. 1 LSU. First pitch in Lexington, Ky., is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
