$12.3 Million Raised for Student-Athlete Scholarships in 2014-2015
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The IU Varsity Club has set a new record for annual giving to IU Athletics. For the fourth time in five years, the Varsity Club has increased the total amount of funds raised during its annual giving campaign for student-athlete scholarships.
With $12.3 million in contributions received during the 2014-2015 fiscal year ending June 30, 2015, the Varsity Club exceeded its $12 million fundraising goal and broke its 2013 annual giving record by $400,000. June 2015 was the single largest month of giving in the Varsity Club's annual giving history with $5.2 million in total contributions ($800,000 more than June 2014).
"This record-breaking fundraising year is made even more meaningful given that IU Athletics receives no taxpayer support, no special university subsidy, and no student fees," said Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass. "Varsity Club donors make it possible for us to educate our student-athletes and successfully compete in athletics, all without diverting any funds from the academic mission of the university."
"And, because the athletic department pays the costs to operate the Varsity Club, every penny contributed by Varsity Club donors goes to its intended purpose such as scholarships and facility improvements. Our students take great pride in wearing the Cream and Crimson and we take great pride in the unwavering generosity of the IU Varsity Club's members."
As part of the annual giving program, the Varsity Club launched a new initiative in 2014-2015 to reward donors who give 10% more than their prior year gifts. The Earn Your Stripes 110% program raised over $1.1 million from over 1,500 donors. Those donors that earned their stripes will receive a special gift, earn additional priority points, and be eligible to win ultimate baseball, football and basketball experiences.
Funds donated by the Varsity Club's more than 6,500 annual giving fund donors support student-athlete scholarships in all of IU's 24 varsity sports. Over 56 percent of IU's 757 varsity student-athletes received athletic scholarship assistance last year. 23.78 percent received full scholarships; 32.23 percent received partial scholarship support.
"Varsity Club donors are among the most dedicated in Hoosier Nation," said Deputy Athletic Director Scott Dolson. "Their generosity toward student-athlete success is unparalleled. Year after year, they demonstrate their commitment by making it possible for student-athletes to follow their dreams on the field and in the classroom. This year, donors contributed above and beyond and I know I speak for all of our student-athletes and IU Athletics staff when I say how extraordinarily grateful we are for their record-breaking support."
"I also want to thank the Varsity Club Board of Directors and the IU Athletics Capital Campaign Steering Committee and for their leadership, advocacy, and guidance in our fundraising efforts," added Deputy Athletic Director Scott Dolson. "Behind the scenes, our fundraising success also would not be possible without the hard work and collaboration of the IU Varsity Club, IU Athletics Ticket Office, IU Foundation, and our entire IU Athletics staff. All played integral roles in this uncharted success and their hard work and dedication has been remarkable."
