WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Behind redshirt junior Marissa Borschke's first career goal in a Hoosier uniform and a six-save effort from senior goalkeeper Sarah Stone, the Indiana Women's Soccer team picked up its first victory of the season against Missouri on Friday afternoon, 1-0.
"I just thought this was a total team effort," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "Every single person who was here with us, from our coaching staff and tactical changes, to the players, we put it all in. I think today was the definition of united. We got it done and we fought to the last whistle."
The game was a defensive stalemate in the first period with just four shots on goal between the two teams. However, the Tigers did create more opportunities early on as Missouri held an 8-4 shot advantage at halftime.
Missouri earned a pair of corners in the first four minutes of action, but the Indiana defense came up big and was able to minimize the early threat as the Tigers had just a high header to show for the corners.
Stone made the biggest stop of the half in the 39th minute as Missouri's Jessica Johnson chased down a cross while the ball, Johnson and Stone all arrived at the same point in the box at the exact same time. Stone managed to knock it down using her body to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
The Indiana offense came out firing in the second period as the Hoosiers matched their first-half shot count in the first 19 minutes of play.
"We knew the first 15-20 minutes after halftime were going to be really critical to us," said Berbary. "We just needed to keep our composure."
Indiana earned a corner eight minutes into the second frame as redshirt junior Kayleigh Steigerwalt dropped one into the box, setting up Borschke's header from six yards out.
"Throughout preseason and practices up to today, we've been really focusing on set pieces and being aggressive," said Borschke. "When (Steigerwalt) was taking the corner I was like 'Okay, I'm just going to try and get anything I can on it and ended up getting my head on it."
The defense continued to clamp down, limiting the Tigers' quality looks. Missouri put up a trio of shots in the final eight minutes of action with Stone making a pair of saves, including once again battling Missouri's Johnson as she made a diving stop in the 82nd minute to all but seal the Indiana victory.
"Stone came up big for us today," said Berbary. "One huge save in each half and that's usually what we ask of our keeper. Her leadership back there is more than I can ask for right now. She's doing a fantastic job."
Friday's victory marked the second consecutive clean sheet for the Indiana defense and extended its streak to 272 scoreless minutes.
"It was awesome to get the first win under the belt and hopefully we can continue it," said Borschke.
Indiana returns to action on Sunday at 11 a.m. to face Baylor in the final day of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup.
