WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – After 94 minutes of scoreless action, freshman Cassidy Blacha connected on her first career goal on an unassisted shot to the inside left post to give Indiana a 1-0 victory against Baylor on Sunday in the Boilermaker Challenge Cup.
The win comes two days after defeating Missouri to make it 2-0 on the weekend, marking the first time since Sept. 5 and 7 that the Hoosiers turned in a perfect weekend.
"It's very hard to complete a weekend in college soccer, especially with the schedule we put together in the non-conference," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "It took a lot out of us on Friday and I was really happy with our performance today."
The game extended the Indiana defense's scoreless streak to 367 scoreless minutes, marking the longest streak since a span of 404 minutes in 2006. The Hoosiers have not allowed a goal since the 18th minute against Virginia Tech on Aug. 21 and have posted three consecutive shutouts.
"It feels great to win but also to have our backline so strong and confident in each other and covering so well," said Indiana senior goalkeeper Sarah Stone. "I think it really showed in our game today that we're going to work hard every minute and if you get beat, you're covering for your teammates and I just think it's a great feeling to have people so together and strong in the back."
Defense paced the game from the outset as Baylor put up two shots on goal in the first half, with Indiana unable to put one on target. The Hoosiers did have chances though as they earned four corners in the first half, including three straight in the 32nd an 33rd minutes.
Marissa Borschke connected on Indiana's only shot on goal in regulation in the 50th minute as she launched a header off a corner kick. However, Baylor's Sara Martinson was able to bring the ball down to keep the contest scoreless.
On the other side of the field, Stone once again turned in an impressive performance as she collected four saves on the day. The closest Baylor got to finding the back of the net came on a header by Sarah King in the 10th minute of play. Stone made a diving stop to her left to keep the ball out.
Blacha threatened to score twice in the final 22 minutes of regulation. In the 68th minute she took a cross from freshman Abby Allen that just went high and again went too high on an attempt in the 84th minute.
After a yellow card on Baylor's Ashley York, a free kick attempt pushed the ball into the box. The ball was knocked around and back out to Blacha, who sunk the ball from 18 yards out to give Indiana the victory.
"It happened earlier, I took one extra touch and didn't get the shot off," said Blacha. "Coach pulled me over said 'keep your composure, take one touch, take a deep breath and hit it' then it happened five minutes later."
"She stayed composed, she took one extra touch, got that small window we asked her to get and buried it," said Berbary.
Up next for the Hoosiers, Indiana travels to LSU next weekend to battle Middle Tennessee State on Friday and LSU on Sunday.
