BATON ROUGE, La. – Combining a defense that posted its fourth consecutive shutout and an offense that found its groove early, the Indiana Women's Soccer team earned its third win in a row on Friday against Middle Tennessee State, 2-0.
The Hoosier defense is currently riding a streak of 457 scoreless minutes, which began early in the first half against Virginia Tech in the season opener. The stretch is the longest in Indiana program history since the inaugural 1993 team posted eight straight shutouts.
Freshman Maya Piper struck first in the 17th minute as she picked up a loose ball on an Indiana corner to record her first career goal. The score was the quickest goal for the Hoosiers this season, who had not registered a first-half goal going into Friday's contest.
"The first 10 minutes were still a little shaky but I thought we got it together and we really controlled the tempo of the game from that point on," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary.
Another freshman in Hanna Johnson made her presence felt early on. After a cross from Kayleigh Steigerwalt in the 24th minute, Johnson just missed on a shot that went high. Eight minutes later, she picked up another attempt, this time an on-target opportunity saved by MTSU goalkeeper Kelsey Brouwer.
Redshirt junior Marissa Borschke, who recorded her first goal in an Indiana uniform last Friday against Missouri, registered her second score off a corner kick taken by senior Jessie Bujouves to push Indiana's lead to 2-0 in the 39th minute.
"I thought we gave ourselves a couple opportunities – really good ones – in front of the goal," said Berbary. "We had more shots on goal and were able to put away the two set pieces early."
Indiana took that 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime, marking the first time this season the Hoosiers have had an advantage at the break.
The Blue Raiders did get more opportunities to end the shutout in the second half, putting up a trio of shots on goal. MTSU recorded its first on-target shot in the 47th minute.
MTSU kept coming as 12 minutes later, Amalie Anderal gave the Blue Raiders their best look of the game on a shot in the crowded box. However, Indiana goalkeeper Sarah Stone, who earned all three of her saves in the second half, was able to get her fists up to punch the ball out of harm's way.
"Many goalkeepers can't make that save," said Berbary. "She hit that so hard to the back post and the fact that she got her hands on that was unbelievable."
"I think everything was really strong tonight," said Stone. "Our backline was really strong and we didn't face as many shots on goal so when it did get back there, I had to be there to make the save. They came up big for me so many times, so I had to come up big once."
The Hoosiers limited the Blue Raiders' offensive threat by being active in the final third as Indiana earned 10 corners, which is double the amount MTSU has given up in its first three games combined.
Along with the season-high two goals scored, Indiana's 13 shots were also the most put up by the Hoosiers this season. Three different freshmen – Johnson, Piper and Abby Allen – recorded a trio of shots each.
Indiana returns to action on Sunday as they face Stomp in the Swamp tournament host LSU at 2 p.m. ET. The game will be shown live on SECNetwork +.
"I think we just have to bring the momentum from today's game into Sunday's, just work together and fight hard, " said Borschke.
