Indiana Opens Strong at Powerade Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. – The Indiana women's golf team got their 2015-16 season underway on Sunday at the Powerade Cougar Classic hosted by the College of Charleston. Freshman Erin Harper paced a strong team effort that has the Hoosiers in a tie for seventh place as a team after the first round, just six strokes out of second place with a score of 294 (+6).

Harper, a freshman from Dublin, Ohio competing in her first collegiate tournament, is tied for 15^th on the individual leaderboard after her opening round score of 72 featured two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars. She began her round with seven straight pars before bogeys on her eighth and 10^th holes put her at 2-over par. But she posted birdies on 12 and 18 to finish at even par for the round.

Senior Camille Chevalier tied for a team-best with three birdies on her way to a 1-over par round of 73. After starting her round with a birdie on her second hole, she ran into a string of four bogeys in five holes in the middle of her round. But she rebounded by going 2-under over her final four holes.

Freshman Eva Domingo Graells, contributed nicely in her first collegiate tournament, chipping in with a 2-over par round of 74. She birdied her ninth hole to offset a trio of bogeys prior to that and would then go on to register a pair of birdies and bogeys on the back nine.

The fourth score that counted was a 3-over par round of 75 by sophomore Pear Siriko. After getting off to a difficult start with a double bogey on her first hole, she erased that with birdies on holes 3 and five to get back to even par. Then bogeys on holes 6, 11 and 12 put her at 3-over before she closed with six straight pars.

Junior Ana Sanjuan is the fifth IU golfer competing and he was just off the pace with a 7-over par round of 79.

Out of the five Big Ten teams competing in the tournament, the Hoosiers posted the best score in round one.
