MINNEAPOLIS – The Indiana Women's Soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 18 Minnesota on Friday afternoon. Freshman Hanna Johnson recorded her first career goal for the Hoosiers in the 17th minute.
Indiana (3-5-4, 0-2-2 B1G) outshot the Hoosiers, 10-8, but the Golden Gophers had six of those shots come in on goal, while Indiana had three.
Sophomore Kayla Smith got Indiana started early on as she sent in a shot on goal in the fifth minute on an attempt that was saved by Minnesota's Tarah Hobbs near the top post.
The Golden Gophers (9-1-2, 4-0-0 B1G) got on the board first in the 15th minute as April Bockin pushed the ball to the left of a diving Sarah Stone from 20 yards out.
Minnesota's Simone Kolander threatened to add onto the lead just one minute later but Stone picked up her first save of the game on the stop. Stone finished the game with three saves.
After taking the ball away from a Minnesota attacker near the center line, Johnson passed the ball to freshman Caroline Dreher who sent it right back to Johnson at the top of the box. She then went to her right and tied up the game on a tall shot to the left corner.
"In the last couple of games Hanna has really been threatening in and around the 25 yards to goal area," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "We've been trying to teach her to be a little more composed in what she's doing when she does get facing-forward and I thought she did a good job of getting her head up and striking the ball on frame."
Seven minutes later, Kolander broke the stalemate as her shot bounced off the left post and in to put Minnesota up 2-1, a lead that the Golden Gophers took into the locker room at half.
The Hoosiers came out aggressively to start the second half as they put up five consecutive shots in the first 12 minutes of play, including an on-target look by Johnson.
"We really tried to focus a bit more on our attacking," said Berbary. "We've been pretty defensive the last couple games and we as a group have been looking to take a few more risks and try to get a couple more numbers forward in the attack to be more dangerous near the goal. I thought we did a good job of that for the most part today, we just need to continue to work on the details so we can find the back of the net."
Minnesota took advantage of an opportunity at the top of the box in the 62nd minute as Molly Fiedler sent the ball to Josee Stiever, who found the back of the net to push the Golden Gophers' lead to 3-1.
Indiana returns home to Armstrong Stadium on Saturday as the Hoosiers play host to Iowa at 8 p.m.
