BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After a successful fall season in which the Indiana men's tennis team captured a singles and doubles title at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional, the Hoosiers open their dual match season with a trip to Chapel Hill, N.C., to participate in the ITA Division I Kick-Off-Weekend.
The No. 50 Indiana Hoosiers open play on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against No. 10 North Carolina. Also competing at the site are No. 35 Drake and No. 40 NC State. The winners will play the following day with a spot at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on the line.
In the fall season senior Sam Monette captured the ITA Ohio Valley Regional singles title and Monette and senior Daniel Bednarczyk won the doubles title.
At the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Monette defeated the No. 7 seed, Nicolas Alvarez from Duke.
Other highlights from the fall included sophomore Raheel Manji winning the Wake Forest Invitational and junior Bloomington native Matthew McCoy reached the semifinal at the Big Ten Singles/Doubles Championships.
"It was a great fall season," IU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. We had a lot of victories throughout the fall that show how promising this group is moving forward."
The North Carolina Tar Heels are No. 10 in the ITA Rankings and opened their season last week with victories over Georgetown and North Carolina A&T.
The Hoosiers went from ninth to fifth in the Big Ten in Wurtzman's first season in Bloomington and return a veteran group with five seniors and two juniors. Wurtzman said the team is looking forward to the strong challenge this weekend.
"We are there to compete and move on," he said. "We want to believe that we can go in and compete with any team in the country. Our match against North Carolina will be a strong test immediately, but we have the belief that we can play with anyone."
The Hoosiers host their home openers on Jan. 30 with matches against VCU (11:00 a.m.) and Marquette (6:00 p.m.)
