Cross Country Heads to Bradley Classic, Pre-National Invitational
10/13/2016 11:54:00 AM | Cross Country
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana cross country team will split up to compete in two separate meets this weekend. Sixteen runners will head to Peoria, Illinois on Friday afternoon to compete in the Bradley Classic. The remainder of the team's runners will head to Terre Haute on Saturday morning to take part in the Pre-National Invitational Meet.
The classic will be run at Donovan Park on the campus of Bradley University on Friday. Roughly 30 schools will compete between the men's and women's races. Colorado, sixth ranked men's team and the second ranked women's team, is the only school other than IU that is ranked coming into the meet. The Hoosiers will have representation in all four races of the meet.
Bradley Classic Schedule
2:00 p.m. – Women's 6k White Race
2:45 p.m. – Men's 8k White Race
3:30 p.m. – Women's 6k Red Race
4:15 p.m. – Men's 8k Red Race
The Invitational meet is loaded with ranked programs. More than 60 teams and 500 athletes will run in the men's races, while 70 teams and over 600 athletes will compete on the women's side.
Eight ranked teams will be in action in the men's race, including four programs inside the top 10. Oregon is the highest ranked team in the field, sitting fourth in the most recent poll. Arkansas (fifth), Colorado (sixth) and Portland (seventh) round out the top 10 schools competing. UTEP (12th) comes in one spot higher than the Hoosiers (13th), followed by Eastern Kentucky (15th) and Michigan (20th).
The high level of competition will allow the team to showcase its talent and could propel them into a top 10 ranking next week. A top tier finish could also lead to IU entering the discussion as a national championship contender.
The women's race will have seven ranked schools. Colorado will be the favorite, at least on paper, as they are the second ranked women's team. Portland (fifth), Stanford (seventh) and Oregon (ninth) give the women's race four top 10 programs as well. Arkansas (12th), Eastern Michigan (16th) and Virginia (22nd) round out the ranked teams in the field.
The women's team will look to continue a strong season against a highly touted field. IU is undefeated coming into the weekend and with a great race, the team could be vaulted into the rankings for the first time this season.
Both Indiana teams will run in the Blue Race. The women will run at 11:00 a.m., with the men following at 11:35 a.m.
