Hoosiers Upset No. 22 Buckeyes

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior Jazzmine McDonald led the Hoosiers with 13 kills and hit .667 for the match as the Indiana volleyball team knocked off the No. 22 Ohio State Buckeyes in four sets (25-22, 25-23, 17-25, 25-23) on Saturday at University Gym.
The win for the Hoosiers (16-11, 5-9) is their first win over Ohio State since Oct. 8, 2010 and is the second win over a ranked opponent in the last week. The Hoosiers beat No. 13 Michigan last Saturday at University Gym.
"These are big wins for our program," IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan said. "If we can keep learning and keep motivated that is going to be huge for us."
Freshman Deyshia Lofton tallied 11 kills and senior Taylor Lebo posted 15 digs. Freshman Victoria Brisack (27 assists) and senior Megan Tallman (18 assists) split time at the setter position. Sophomore Elizabeth Asdell tallied seven kills and hit .333 for the match.
McDonald has come alive for the Hoosiers in the last three matches. She has recorded double-digit kills in each of the team's last three matches for a combined 41 kills on 58 swings with three errors (.656 hitting percentage).
The Hoosiers served aggressively throughout the match to keep Ohio State out of system and collected five aces on the night, three by senior Allison Hammond.
In the first set the Hoosiers built a 17-11 lead on back-to-back kills by Asdell, but Ohio State (15-10, 5-9) came back to within two at 20-18.
Indiana extended the lead to three at 22-19 on another Asdell kill and went up 24-20 with an Ohio State attack error. Ohio State scored two straight points to make it 24-22, but after an IU timeout the Buckeyes hit it long for a service error to give the Hoosiers the first set.
In the second set the Hoosiers recorded 14 kills, with nine by the combination of McDonald and Lofton. Indiana posted a sideout percentage of 70 percent but at 66 percent the Buckeyes kept it close.
The Hoosiers led 15-9 but the Buckeyes again closed the gap, this time they tied it 19-19. The Hoosiers responded with two straight points to go up 21-19 and force Ohio State to call a timeout.
The Buckeyes stormed back to take a 23-22 lead and Indiana called a timeout to regroup. The Hoosiers scored on kills by Brisack and Lofton and a block by Lofton and Asdell ended the set, 25-23 to give the Hoosiers a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set Ohio State scored the first seven points and led 18-10. The Hoosiers cut the deficit to five at 18-13 but the Buckeyes would go on to win the third set, 25-17 and force a fourth set.
The Indiana offense came alive in the final set as they hit .391 with 14 kills and five errors. On the other side Ohio State hit .115 with 11 kills and eight attack errors.
The set remained close with 10 ties and four lead changes including a tie at 22-22.

After an Ohio State kill Hammond struck again on an overpass and put it down as the Hoosiers celebrated the victory over the Buckeyes.
Up next the Hoosiers travel to Michigan for a rematch with the Wolverines on Wednesday Nov. 9.
