Hoosiers Earn All-American Honors on First Night of NCAA Championships

ATLANTA – The No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers women's swimming and diving team got off to a tremendous start at the 2016 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta on Wednesday evening.
The Indiana 800 freestyle relay team of Haley Lips, Stephanie Marchuk, Grace Vertigans and Kennedy Goss placed eighth overall with a time of 6:59.82 to earn All-American honors. The mark is the third-fastest time in Indiana history.
IU entered the event seeded No. 9 overall, but cut over a second off their seed time of 7:00.83 to move up a spot and earn critical points in the team standings.
The Hoosiers were the top finisher of four Big Ten teams in the event, as Michigan placed 11th, Penn State 14th and Purdue 17th overall.
In the leadoff leg, senior Haley Lips had a terrific swim, finishing the first 200 in a personal-best time of 1:43.52. Lips' time is the second-fastest time in Indiana history.
The 2016 NCAA Championships continue on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. ET with the prelims of the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 1-meter dive.
