King’s Historic Swim Leads Hoosiers at NCAA Prelims on Friday

ATLANTA – Lilly King and the No. 13-ranked Indiana University women's swimming and diving team had a historic morning prelim session at the 2016 NCAA Championships at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
Along with King's unprecedented performance in the 100 breaststroke, the Hoosiers qualified for five Championship Finals and two Consolation Finals on Friday night.
100 Breaststroke
Simply put, no swimmer has ever accomplished what Lilly King accomplished on Friday morning, as the freshman swam the fastest 100 breaststroke in history, timing in with a 57.15.
King's unbelievable time set the American record, NCAA record, NCAA Meet record, U.S. Open record, Indiana school record, Big Ten record and GT Pool record. The Evansville, Ind. native will be the No. 1 seed for the Championship Final in the event on Friday evening.
King's time bested the previous American, NCAA, NCAA Meet and U.S. Open records of 57.23 of Breeja Larson of Texas A&M, who set the mark at the NCAA Championships in 2014.
Joining King in the Championship Final will be classmate Miranda Tucker, who qualified fifth overall with a time of 58.91. Tucker's time is the fifth-fastest in school history.
200 Freestyle
The Hoosiers had a terrific showing in the 200 freestyle prelims, as both Haley Lips and Kennedy Goss qualified for the evening's Championship Final. Lips qualified fifth overall for the Championship Final, while Goss qualified eighth.
Lips won Heat 6 of 8 with a time of 1:43.79, while Goss finished fourth in the same heat with a mark of 1:44.29. Lips' time is the fourth-fastest in school history, while Goss' ranks in a tie for the ninth-fastest 200 free performance.
3-Meter Dive
Lacey Houser was outstanding for the Hoosiers in the 3-meter prelims, qualifying for the evening's Championship Final with a score of 333.70. The Championship Final is the first in the career for the senior from Danville, Ind.
Michal Bower tied for 47th place in the 3-meter with a total of 246.30.
100 Butterfly
Gia Dalesandro swam well in the morning prelim, qualifying 15th overall to earn a spot in Friday night's 100 butterfly Consolation Final with a time of 52.04. Dalesandro's time ranks as the third-fastest time in school history.
200 Medley Relay
The 200 medley relay team of Marie Chamberlain, Lilly King, Gia Dalesandro and Grace Vertigans qualified ninth overall to secure the top spot in the Consolation Final with a time of 1:36.93.
400 IM
In the 400 IM, junior Bailey Pressey placed 30th overall with a personal-best time of 4:12.23. With her mark, Pressey ranks as the seventh-fastest 400 IM swimmer in school history.
100 Backstroke
In the 100 backstroke, Marie Chamberlain placed 31st overall with a time of 53.01.
The 2016 NCAA Championships continue on Friday evening at 6 p.m. ET with the finals of the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 3-meter dive and 200 medley relay.
