ATLANTA – The No. 7-ranked Indiana University women's swimming and diving team concluded the most-successful NCAA Championships in program history on Saturday night at the McAuley Center in Atlanta.
Lilly King won her second national title in as many nights, finishing 1-2 with fellow freshman Miranda Tucker in the 200 breaststroke to cap a spectacular showing for the Hoosiers at the 2016 NCAA Championships.
For her efforts, King was named CSCAA Swimmer of the Year, becoming the first Hoosier to ever win the prestigious award.
The Hoosiers placed seventh with a total of 228 points. The seventh-place finish and 228 points are both the best for the team in NCAA Championship history. IU was also the top Big Ten finisher at the national championships for the second-straight year. Georgia won the NCAA team title with a total score of 414.
The top-10 finish is the seventh in program history and marks the first time the team posted consecutive top-10's since IU placed 10th three-straight years from 2008-10. The team also garnered 27 All-America honors – the most for the program since 2004.
After setting the swimming world on fire Friday night with the fastest 100 breaststroke swim in history, Lilly King did it again on Saturday, winning the NCAA Championship with the fastest 200 breaststroke performance of all-time at 2:03.59.
The freshman broke every record in the event with her historic swim – the American, NCAA, NCAA Meet, U.S. Open, Indiana school, Big Ten and Georgia Tech Pool records – and now owns all of the aforementioned records in both the 100 and 200 breast. In total, King recorded an impressive four All-America honors at her first NCAA Championships.
With her second NCAA title in as many nights, King becomes the first woman – and fourth in the Big Ten – to win multiple national championships in one year. King is the first Hoosier – man or woman – to win multiple NCAA crowns in one year since Jim Montgomery in 1976.
The Evansville, Ind. native is the first woman to win both the 100 breast and 200 breast at one NCAA Championships since Rebecca Soni in 2009. King is the 10th woman to win both events in NCAA history.
The national championship is the eighth in history for the Indiana women's program and is the fourth for the team in the last three years. IU is the first Big Ten women's team to win individual crowns in three-straight seasons and the four NCAA titles in three years is the most for any women's Big Ten program since Minnesota won four from 2010-11.
