PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The No. 50 Indiana women's tennis team started off its three-match road trip with a 6-1 win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (6-8) on Saturday.
The Hoosiers (12-4) with familiar doubles players won at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. IU's Sarah McLean and Natalie Whalen took the No. 1 win 6-2. The Hoosiers capped off the doubles victory when Danielle Wolf and Madison Appel won 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Led by dominant performances at No. 2, 3, and 4 singles, the Hoosiers won at all but one spot in singles. Paula Gutierrez (No. 2), McLean (No. 3), Stephanie Smith (No. 4) and Whalen (No. 5) all won in straight sets.
Wolf (No. 6), outlasted Lee Levy of Rutgers in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.
F"or our first outdoor match we played okay," head coach Lin Loring said. "It was Rutgers third match outdoors, so that was a concern for us. But we competed hard on every court. Any road win in the conference is a good win."
The Hoosiers will continue their road trip with a match in Ann Arbor against the Michigan Wolverines next Saturday, March 26.
