IU Breaks Two School Records Thursday Night at NCAA Championships

ATLANTA – The No. 8-ranked Indiana University men's swimming and diving team had a record night at the 2016 NCAA Championships on Thursday night at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
After two days, the Hoosiers sit in 11th place overall with a total score of 62 points. Texas leads through Event 7 with a total of 209 points.
In the Championship Final of the 400 medley relay, Indiana placed seventh overall with a school record time of 3:05.57. Earning All-America honors for IU was the relay team of Bob Glover, Tanner Kurz, Vini Lanza and Blake Pieroni.
The Championship Final appearance for the Hoosiers in the 400 medley relay is the first for the program since 1980, when the team placed sixth overall.
In the Consolation Final of the 50 freestyle, Ali Khalafalla set a school record, placing third to finish 11th overall with a time of 19.21. Khalafalla broke the record (19.27) he matched earlier in the night in the leadoff leg of the 200 freestyle relay.
With his school record, Khalafalla now owns the top-seven times in the 50 freestyle in Indiana history, setting four of the top-five times on Thursday alone.
The Hoosiers had a tremendous swim to win the 200 freestyle relay Consolation Final and place ninth overall in the event. The team of Ali Khalafalla, Blake Pieroni, Anze Tavcar and Sam Lorentz touched the wall in a time of 1:17.00 – the second-fastest time in school history.
Pieroni earned his fourth and fifth All-America honors on Thursday, while Anze Tavcar notched his fifth. Khalafalla recorded his second and third All-America accolades, while Tanner Kurz and Sam Lorentz each earned their second.
Vini Lanza, Bob Glover and Oliver Patrouch each earned their first respective All-America honors.
The 2016 NCAA Championships continue on Friday morning at 10 a.m. ET for the Hoosiers with the prelims of the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 200 medley relay and 3-meter dive.
