BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana baseball (12-11) dropped a 5-0 decision to the Cincinnati Bearcats on Tuesday evening at Bart Kaufman Field.
The Hoosiers' pitching staff tossed a combined 12 strikeouts in the contest.
Freshman Paul Milto (1-1) grabbed five of those punch outs in four innings of work. The Hoosiers' starter scattered four hits for two runs (zero earned). Junior Luke Stephenson tallied one strikeout in his single inning, while junior Kent Williams added four punch outs in over three innings. Freshman Tim Herrin and sophomore Brian Hobbie each added a strikeout in the effort.
Errors plagued the Hoosiers early as a throwing miscue in both the second and third innings granted the Bearcats a 2-0 lead. Indiana put runners on the corners in the bottom of the third, as junior Tony Butler doubled and advanced on sophomore Laren Eustace's single, but two outs afterwards ended the threat.
Cincinnati tacked on an additional run in the fifth inning. The Hoosiers had another chance to close the gap in the home half of the sixth inning. Eustace was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and advanced on junior Craig Dedelow's single to right but would be stranded at third base following a fielder's choice.
Indiana will host the Evansville Purple Aces for a mid-week contest tomorrow evening. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
Game Notes: With a single in the second inning, Ryan Fineman extended his hitting streak to five games, the second best active hitting streak on the team and the longest of his career… Paul Milto's five strikeouts were a career-high…In his relief outing, Kent Williams surpassed his career high in innings pitched with 3.0 innings and his career high in strikeouts with three... With a double in the eighth inning, Eustace notched his fourth multi-hit game of the season and his career…Craig Dedelow's sixth inning single extended his games with a hit this season to 18 games, the most for IU.
