PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Indiana Baseball (2-6) got back in the win column on Friday afternoon with a decisive 14-1 victory over the Illinois State Redbirds. The Hoosiers collected 19 hits in the victory, highlighted by a five-hit effort from sophomore Laren Eustace.
Eustace went 5-for-6 on the afternoon, with one home run, four RBI and four runs scored while also stealing two bases. Freshman Ryan Fineman also had a career-day, registering four hits with an RBI. Junior Alex Krupa posted a career-best three hits with an RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore Isaiah Pasteur went 2-for-5 and drove in two runs.
The Hoosiers put together a complete team-effort in the win, as the pitching staff combined for a five-hit effort, highlighted by a strong starting performance from senior Kyle Hart. The Cincinnati, Ohio native strung together a career-best 10 strikeouts while scattering three hits in six innings of work and did not walk a batter. Junior Sullivan Stadler and freshman Tim Herrin closed out the final three innings of action.
Eustace and Krupa each reached base to leadoff the game on base-hits to give the Hoosiers runners at first and second. Following two consecutive outs, junior Tony Butler worked a walk, which included a wild pitch on ball four. In result of that wild pitch, Eustace scored from second, Krupa moved to third and Butler advanced to second. Pasteur followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0.
Freshman Luke Miller led off the fifth inning with a triple and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Butler to increase the lead to 4-0. A two-out double by Pasteur and an RBI single by Fineman made it a 5-0 game after five innings of play.
Eustace got the wheels turning in the sixth after he singled by stealing second and third. Krupa, who walked after Eustace reached, stole second and gave Indiana two runners in scoring position. That was later followed by a two-run single from junior Craig Dedelow, who extended his reached base streak to 13 games. Butler, who had two RBI in the game, scored Miller on a groundout later in the inning to make it 8-0.
In the seventh, Eustace continued his hot swinging with a two-run home run, the second of the season for him, scoring Fineman to make it 10-0 Hoosier lead.
Illinois State tacked on a run in the eighth to make it a 10-1 game.
Then in the ninth, Eustace added two more RBI to his stat sheet on a base hit, which gave him his fifth hit on the afternoon. RBIs by Krupa and junior Austin Cangelosi later in the inning made it 14-0 in favor of Indiana.
Indiana is back in action on Saturday with an 11 a.m. rematch with Seton Hall. Senior Evan Bell will start for Indiana.
