
IU Falls on the Road at No. 38 Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. – Indiana women's tennis wrapped up its final road match of the 2016 regular season coming up on the short end of a 6-1 tally to No. 38 Northwestern on Sunday afternoon.
For the second straight day for Indiana (13-8, 3-4), the doubles point would be decided by a tiebreak in final match remaining on the court. Northwestern (9-8, 7-0) struck first winning at No. 3 before the IU duo of Kim Schmider and Stephanie Smith picked up a 6-4 win over NU's Brooke Rischbieth and Alicia Barnett at No. 2.
The No. 1 doubles match featured Indiana's Paula Gutierrez and Sarah McLean against Northwestern's Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp. With the match tied at 6-6, the 45th-ranked Wildcat duo would get the upper hand and take the tiebreaker by a 7-3 margin, and with that clinched the doubles point for Northwestern.
In singles, the Wildcats dominated by clinching the overall team win with straight-set triumphs out of the gate at No. 3, No. 2, No. 5 and No. 1.
Smith was a bright spot for the Hoosiers as she bounced back after dropping the first set at No. 4 before rebounding to down NU's Alex Chatt, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. Northwestern would pick up its sixth point in another straight-set victory at No. 6 to close the match.
IU will close the regular season with four-straight home matches. That stretch starts on Friday, April 15 when Indiana hosts Wisconsin at 3 p.m. ET in Bloomington.
