MEN'S GOLF EARNS NCAA APR PUBLIC RECOGNITION FOR NINTH STRAIGHT YEAR
For the ninth straight year, the Indiana men's golf team received the NCAA Academic Progress Rate Public Recognition Award for finishing in the top 10 percent of men's golf teams in academic progress. Overall, it is the tenth time in 11 years that the men's golf team has received the honor.
HOOSIERS TIE FOR SIXTH AT OTTER CREEK
Serving as the host school for the Hoosier Collegiate at Otter Creek, the Indiana men's golf team finished in a tie for sixth place with a total score of 590 over the two rounds. Andrew Havill and Max Kollin both finished tied for 13th place while Jake Brown and Keegan Vea were tied for 30th.
For Havill, it marked his second straight Top 15 finish and his best finish of the season while Kollin's T13 finish is his best at a tournament outside of Bloomington.
IU TAKES THIRD AT HOOSIER INVITATIONAL
At the annual Hoosier Invitational at the IU Golf Course, the Indiana men's golf team posted a third place finish last weekend. Playing in very windy and cool conditions, the Hoosiers battled the elements to record back-to-back top 3 finishes in tournaments (2nd at Loyola Intercollegiate) for the first time since the spring of 2013.
Redshirt freshman picked up his first individual win as he was part of a five-way tie for medalist honors at Even par. He posted a 1-under par 70 in round one before coming back with a 1-over par 72 in round two. The win marks the first for an IU player since Andrew Fogg won the Hoosier Invitational in 2013.
Junior Andrew Havill also carded his best career finish, coming in with a sixth place finish.
FUN IN THE ARIZONA SUN
At the Loyola Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Arizona, the Hoosiers finished in second place with a team score of 842. It marked the best team finish for IU since winning the NYX in 2013. Indiana opened the tournament with a team score of 271, which was the lowest team score since posting the same score at the Renaissance Invitational on Nov. 1, 2009.
Individually, redshirt freshman Jake Brown closed his tournament with a 62 in the final round, which was one shot off the school record. His tournament score of 202 is the sixth-best tournament score in program history and earned him second place at the Loyola Intercollegiate.
Brendon Doyle tied for eighth individually with a score of 208 for the tournament while Keegan Vea was 33rd with his score of 217.
BIG TEN MATCH PLAY RECAP
At the Big Ten Match Play Championship in Florida, Indiana opened against No. 20 Penn State and pulled out a 3.5-2.5 win over the Nittany Lions. Later that same day, they took on Minnesota and suffered a 4-2 loss but three of the matches went to the 18th hole.
In the final round robin match, against Rutgers, Indiana was on the good side of a 4-2 outcome and narrowly missed advancing to the championship match. In the third place match, the Hoosiers took on in-state rival Purdue, who was ranked No. 14 in the country. The final score saw Purdue come away with a 5-1 win, but there were numerous chances for the Hoosiers to close the gap throughout the match.
Over the four matches, Brendon Doyle led IU with a 3-1 record while Andrew Havill was just behind him a 2-1-1. In all, each of the six players the competed for Indiana earned at least one win.
BROWN BRINGS IT
Redshirt freshman Jake Brown wasted little time etching his name into the IU record book when he posted a 5-under par score of 66 in his final round at the Windon Memorial.
His final round score of 5-under par 66 marked the best round by a Hoosier since David Mills carded a 66 in his second round at the NYX Hoosier Invitational on April 6, 2013. It is also the best score by an IU freshman since David Erdy registered a 65 on March 22, 2009 at the Collegiate Match Play qualifier in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
VEA'S 68 AT WINDON
Junior Keegan Vea set a career best in the final round of the Windon Memorial earlier this season, when he carded a 68 to help the Hoosiers to a seventh place finish as a team. At the Quail Valley Collegiate, Vea opened with a 76 but improved his score each round, including a 2-under par 70 in the final round to tie for 34th. He followed that up with rounds of 74-71-75 at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic, which put him in a tie for 36th.
DOYLE BRINGS CONSISTENCY
Sophomore Brendon Doyle has been the Hoosiers' most consistent performer through the first five stroke play tournaments of the season. His scoring average of 75.33 is third-best on the team while he has posted scores of 75 or better in nine rounds this year, which is one off the team lead.
HAVILL HAS IT IN FINAL ROUND
Indiana junior Andrew Havill did not get off to the start he had hoped for in the first tournament of the year at Rich Harvest Farms, posting a score of 81 in round one. But he reversed that trend over the next two rounds, recording rounds of 75 and 71, respectively.
The his final round score of 71 was his best single round score since February of his freshman year when he posted a 68 at the Snowman Getaway in Arizona. It was also the best round of any IU golfer at the tournament.
Another strong final round for Havill came in round three of the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate, where he carded a score of 77 when the average score for the round was 79.6, as the wind picked up during the day and made scoring difficult.
The 15-team field features a number of Big Ten teams, including IU, Purdue, Northwestern, Ohio State, Illinois, Michigan State and Wisconsin.
Teams will play 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday with an 8:45 a.m. ET shotgun start both days.
