Hoosiers Down No. 71 Gophers, 5-2

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana women's tennis jumped ahead of No. 71 Minnesota and never looked back to take down the Gophers on Sunday at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts, 5-2.
In doubles, Indiana (14-9, 4-5) struck first as Kim Schmider and Stephanie Smith downed Minnesota's Caroline Ryba and Julia Courter at No. 2, 6-3. Minnesota (12-10, 4-5) then responded with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
With the No. 1 doubles match knotted at 5-5, all eyes turned to watch IU's Paula Gutierrez and Sarah McLean battle UM's AnneMarie Emme and Paula Rincon-Otero. The Hoosier duo rose the occasion winning the next two games to take the match, 7-5, and give IU the doubles point.
Singles started with an Indiana win at No. 2 for Madison Appel as Minnesota's Courter was forced to retire in the first set to push the Hoosiers in front 2-0. The Gophers got on the board with a win at No. 6 before IU's Danielle Wolf cruised in the No. 5 position over Emme, 6-3, 6-1 to give IU a 3-1 edge.
Indiana's Gutierrez would then clinch the win for the Hoosiers as she won in straight sets at No. 1 over Minnesota'a Ryba, 6-3, 6-4.
Picking up IU's fifth point of the day was Smith at the No. 4 spot, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. Smith has won four straight singles matches in Big Ten play and five of her last six.
The Hoosiers will wrap up regular season play next weekend in Bloomington with a pair of matches against Ohio State on Friday, April 22 at 3 p.m. ET and then Penn State on Sunday, April 24 at 11 a.m.
