BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana women's tennis fell to No. 6 Ohio State inside the IU Tennis Center on Friday afternoon, 4-0.
The Buckeyes struck early in doubles, taking wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to earn the doubles point to start things.
In singles, OSU's Sandy Niehaus, the 75th-ranked player in the country, topped Indianas Kim Schmider in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to give Ohio State a 2-0 edge.
The No. 1 and No. 2 matches later ended almost simultaneously as No. 4 Francesca Di Lorenzo of OSU downed No. 98 Paula Gutierrez of IU, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 position. Anna Sanford, ranked 114th nationally, then clinched the match for the Buckeyes with her 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Indiana's Madison Appel at No. 2.
The remaining matches on the courts went unfinished.
"I was very pleased with the way we played today," head coach Lin Loring said. "Ohio State is No. 6 in the country and we were very competitive on every court. We were definitely in the match and playing at their level. Hopefully we can play at that level on Sunday against Penn State."
Indiana returns to the courts on Sunday, April 24 for the regular season finale in Bloomington as the Hoosiers will take on Penn State at 10 a.m. ET.
