BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – With a big crowd at hand in the IU Tennis Center, the 60th-ranked Indiana women's tennis (13-6) fell to 3-2 in the Big Ten with a 6-1 loss to in-state rival Purdue Boilermakers (9-9, 2-3).
Right from the start in doubles play, the Hoosiers and Boilermakers were going in the direction of a tight race for the coveted doubles point. At the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, the Hoosiers and Boilermakers exchanged convincing wins. IU's Kim Schmider and Stephanie Smith won 6-1 at No. 2 while Boilermakers Claudia Escribens and Natalia Davila won 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.
The doubles point was all up to the No. 1 spot and it was a finish that would come down to a tiebreaker.
Down late in the set, Danielle Wolf and Paula Gutierrez battled back to force the tiebreak. Using that momentum, the duo jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the tiebreaker. The Boilermakers didn't give up as they raced to 6-4 lead over the Hoosiers. With the big crowd's support, Wolf and Gutierrez found another rally in them making it 6-6. Back and forth the in-state rivals went until the Boilermakers finally outlasted the Hoosiers with a 9-7 tiebreaker win.
In singles, the Boilermakers ran with the momentum they gained from their exhilarating doubles win. With wins at No. 1 and No. 4, Purdue took a commanding 3-0 match lead. Purdue's Andjela Djokovic clinched the Boilermakers second straight win over the Hoosiers in the past two years with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Hoosiers picked up a win at No. 6 singles due to the retiring of Kim Schmider's opponent Claudia Escribens. Purdue was not done yet with the Hoosiers as they finished the day with two match victories pushing their victory to 6-1.
The Hoosiers go back on the road in the Big Ten as they will travel to Champaign, Ill. to take on the Illinois Fighting Illini on Friday, April 8.
