BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – On gorgeous spring day on the IU Varsity Tennis Courts, Indiana women's tennis rolled past Penn State in the regular season finale, 6-1.
Indiana (15-10, 5-6) took control in the early going as Kim Schmider and Stephanie Smith downed PSU's Katherine Whiteaway and Jacqueline Zuhse at No. 2 doubles, 6-2. Paula Gutierrez and Sarah McLean followed with a win at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point for Indiana.
IU rode the momentum from doubles into singles as Madison Appel made quick work of Penn State's Katia Blik in the No. 2 match, 6-3, 6-4. Danielle Wolf did the same at No. 5, giving up only three games in her 6-2, 6-1 rout of Whiteaway of PSU as IU led 3-0.
Schmider dropped her first set at No. 6, but responded in a positive way to take the next two sets, including a match-clinching ace serve against PSU's Liyin Xu, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, to clinch the overall win for the Hoosiers.
Penn State (8-13, 4-7) then got on the board with a win at No. 3.
Smith kept the good times going for Indiana as she rebounded from an opening set loss to Zuhse to take the match 4-6, 7-6 (7-0), 6-3.
Indiana's Gutierrez also went to a third set at No. 1 and with the team outcome already decided, it came down a tiebreak to claim victory. In the third-set tiebreak, Gutierrez outlasted Kimberly-Ann Surin 12-10 as her final match tally was 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (12-10).
"This was huge win for our program for several reasons," head coach Lin Loring said. "Six teams started the day at 4-6 in the conference, and two wouldn't get into the tourney. The win separated us from the pack and got us the No. 7 seed. Also, Penn State bested us twice last year, so this was a great tournament around. Finally, it was Senior Day and it was nice to go out with a win. "
The Hoosiers will now compete in the Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament beginning on Thursday in East Lansing, Mich. Stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com when final seeding is determined for this week's conference tourney as that will determine what time Indiana will take the courts on Thursday.
