EAST LANSING, Mich. – Indiana Baseball (22-15, 7-4 Big Ten) dropped a 9-0 decision to the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday afternoon to even the series at one game apiece. The Hoosiers were shutout for just the second time this season and the first time since March 29 against Cincinnati.
The Hoosiers struggled offensively against Michigan State's Ethan Allen, who gave up five hits in 7.2 innings, striking out six and walking three. Five different Hoosiers collected a hit on the afternoon, with junior Austin Cangelosi having the lone hit for extra-bases with a double in the second inning. Senior Caleb Baragar gave up four earned runs in 5.1 innings of work.
Indiana posted its first threat in the top of the second with two outs. Cangelosi doubled down the left field line to give the Hoosiers a runner in scoring position with two away. Wilhite shot a single to right, but Cangelosi was thrown out at home on the relay. In the bottom half, the Hoosiers surrendered an unearned run on an RBI groundout to give Michigan State a 1-0 lead after two.
Junior Tony Butler led off the top of the third with a hard single to left and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt from Eustace. After junior Craig Dedelow reached on an error by the shortstop and sophomore Logan Sowers walked, the Hoosiers had the bases loaded with one out. But a tough groundout into a double play left an empty third for IU. The Spartans answered with a safety squeeze in the bottom half to make it 2-0.
After Allen dealt three more scoreless frames, the Spartans sent 12 to the plate in the sixth inning, scoring seven runs on eight hits to increase the lead to 9-0.
Indiana was held hitless from the leadoff batter in the third until one out in the eighth, when Dedelow reached on an infield hit.
Sophomore right hander Brian Hobbie hurled two scoreless innings to close out the game for the Hoosiers.
Indiana and Michigan State will be back in action for the rubber game on Sunday at 3:02 p.m. Senior Evan Bell will start on the mound for Indiana and the contest will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
