Hoosiers Down No. 23 Michigan State in Extras, 8-4; Win Series 2-1

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Indiana Baseball (23-15, 8-4 Big Ten) picked up an 8-4 victory in 11 innings over the 23rd- ranked Michigan State Spartans on Sunday afternoon at McLane Stadium. A four-run top of the 11th would be the deciding factor for the Hoosiers, who took the weekend series by a count of 2-1.
Indiana's first three spots in the order accumulated for seven of its 11 hits in the game. Sophomore Isaiah Pasteur led the way with three hits with one run and an RBI in addition to stealing two bases. Sophomore Logan Sowers picked up two key doubles in the win and drove in three runs. Junior Craig Dedelow and senior Brian Wilhite each had two hits as well and they each drove in a run.
Senior Evan Bell delivered a quality start on the mound for Indiana, as he went six innings giving up two runs on just three hits and striking out two. Junior Jake Kelzer was strong in relief, striking out five in three innings and surrendering a run. Junior Thomas Belcher picked up his third victory of the season.
The Spartans put the first two runs on the board with one in the first inning and one in the second. From there, Bell settled down and did not allow a run in the final four innings. From the third inning and into the sixth, Bell retired eight straight Spartans.
The Hoosiers cut the lead in half in the third inning, manufacturing a run with two outs. Wilhite reached base for the first time with a leadoff single. Following two flyouts, Pasteur roped a triple the opposite way to right field to score Wilhite from first to make it a 2-1 game in favor of Michigan State. Then in the fifth frame, Indiana strung together three-straight singles, all with two outs, resulting in an RBI single from Dedelow.
Indiana took the lead in the seventh inning. Junior Tony Butler led off the frame by reaching via a hit by pitch. With one out, a single by Dedelow moved Butler to third base. Sowers shot a double down the right field line to score Butler and give Indiana a 3-2 edge.
Kelzer put together two clean frames in the seventh and the eighth inning without allowing a run and was well on his way to doing the same in the ninth. After Kelzer started the ninth with ground ball and strikeout, a two-out walk to the Spartans' Jake Kruk gave the home team a base runner. Justin Hovis then delivered the two-out, game-tying RBI double to send the contest into extra innings.
With one out in the 10th, junior Alex Krupa worked a walk for Indiana and stole second. From there, Wilhite connected for an RBI knock to right center, scoring Krupa from second to give the Hoosiers a 4-3 edge. With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Michigan State's Jordan Zimmerman doubled off junior Thomas Belcher and then scored on Dan Durkin's RBI double to send the game into an 11th inning.
The deciding inning for the Hoosiers was a four-run 11th, where three of the four runs the Hoosiers scored were unearned. A walk and a stolen base for Pasteur followed by Dedelow reaching on an E4 gave Indiana runners on first and third. Sowers belted a laser down the left field line to score Pasteur and Dedelow. A two-run double for Krupa later in the inning made it an 8-4 game.
The Hoosiers are back in action this Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. as they take on Notre Dame at Victory Field in Indianapolis.
