BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – On Senior Day, Shannon Cawley delivered as the redshirt senior collected a pair of multi-hit games and Indiana Softball split Friday's doubleheader with (RV/#25) Ohio State. The Hoosiers won the first game, 5-4, before dropping the second, 5-3.
In game one, Cawley went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs, two RBI and a walk. Additionally, she ended the game in the eighth inning as her walk-off double plated freshman Sarah Galovich.
Both teams started slow offensively in the first game as all runs scored in the fifth inning or later. Cawley broke the scoreless stalemate as she knocked a solo homer to left center to give Indiana a fifth-inning 1-0 lead.
Freshman pitcher Tara Trainer got the start in the circle for Indiana and pitched solidly, allowing only three hits in the first five innings of action. However, the Buckeyes would respond in the sixth as an RBI double by Maddy McIntyre plated Cammi Prantl. Next batter, Ashley Goodwin hit a two-run homer to put Ohio State up, 3-1. Freshman lefty Josie Wood then entered the game and picked up the final out to end further damage.
Prantl added a fourth Buckeye run in the seventh as she doubled through the left side to score Alex Bayne.
However, the Hoosiers weren't finished as a one-out walk to Cawley and single by sophomore Taylor Uden put two on for junior CaraMia Tsirigos, who tied up the game on a three-run shot to left center. The homer was the sixth of the season for Tsirigos and the second in as many games as she also knocked one against Rutgers on Sunday.
After Wood made quick work of Ohio State in the top of the eight, with only one run reaching on a field error, the Indiana bats went back at it the bottom of the frame. Galovich reached on a one-out single, followed by a single from sophomore Rebecca Blitz before Cawley doubled to center to secure the 5-4 victory.
The second game of the day saw the Buckeyes jump out to an early 3-0 first-inning lead on RBI singles by Emily Clark and Anna Kirk.
Indiana responded in the bottom of the frame as Blitz reached on a walk, followed by a fielding error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by junior Erin Lehman. Cawley then collected her first of two hits on a single to right center to bring in Blitz.
The Hoosiers loaded the bags in the third as Cawley and senior Michelle Huber singled and Tsirigos drew a walk. As senior Kelsey Dotson was batting, Cawley scored on a wild pitch from Ohio State's Lena Springer. Dotson then tied up the game on a sacrifice fly to right, plating senior Alyssa Rosati in running for Tsirigos.
However, the Buckeyes answered right back in the fourth as they took the lead for good on an RBI double by Bayne and RBI single by Prantl.
The best chance for the Hoosiers came in the sixth as they loaded the bases with just one out on single by Uden and sophomore Rachel O'Malley, followed by a walk to Blitz. But they were left stranded as a strikeout and fielder's choice ended the threat.
Indiana (25-23, 7-12 Big Ten) and Ohio State (30-13-1, 12-6-1 Big Ten) will look to close out the series on Sunday at 11 a.m. Stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com for any updates regarding possible schedule changes due to weather.
