DALE ENGLAND CUP ENDS IN 3-WAY TIE FOR FIRST
After weather postponed the racing on the first day of the Dale England Cup, the schedule was adjusted so that all four teams – Indiana, Notre Dame, Duke and Navy – would race in the same heat and would go against each other twice on Saturday.
When the dust had settled following the afternoon session of racing, there was a 3-way tie for first place between Indiana, Duke and Notre Dame. The predetermined tiebreaker would be the team with the best combined times in the two 1V8 races. After the times were added up, it was Notre Dame that was declared the winner with IU just 0.85 of a second behind. The Hoosiers won the morning session against the Irish with a time of 6:45.7, just 0:00.3 ahead of Notre Dame. In the afternoon session, the Irish were able to pull ahead at the end and win by 1.1 second.
HOOSIERS HAVE SOLID SHOWING AT CLEMSON INVITATIONAL
Last weekend, the Indiana rowing team traveled to Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C., for one of the largest collegiate regattas in the country. They joined 19 other programs there for two days of high-level racing and came away in solid shape.
The 1V8 opened with a third place finish against No. 3 Virginia and No. 14 Washington State in the first heat and then came back in the afternoon and finished first in their heat, edging out UCLA and Radcliffe. The third session of racing the following day pitted IU against No. 8 Texas and it was the Longhorns that earned the win in the heat with IU finishing second.
VARSITY 8 BOATS OFF TO GOOD START AT BIG TEN/ACC CHALLENGE
On April 2, Indiana played host to Iowa and Louisville at Lake Lemon to start the competitive spring season. In the 1V8 race, it was the Hoosiers that came out on top with a time of 6:42.6 while Iowa was three seconds behind and Louisville was nine seconds behind the Hoosiers.
In the 2V8 race, IU once again crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 6:56.2 while Iowa was second, just two seconds back, and Louisville was three seconds back.
IN THE POLLS THIS WEEK
In the CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll that was published on April 20, the Indiana Hoosiers are ranked No. 14.
Overall, there are four Big Ten teams in the Top 20, with Ohio State (3), Michigan (10), Wisconsin (11) and Indiana (14).
NEW FACES IN NEW PLACES
Following the strong run the last two years, graduation took its toll on the Hoosiers Varsity crews heading into 2015-16.
In the 1V8 boat against Iowa and Louisville, there were just three returning members – Alice Wright, Emily Barber and Rebecca Brougher.
UNPRECEDENTED SUCCESS FOR THE HOOSIERS
The Indiana Rowing program is in the midst of unprecedented success for the program, as they have made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Championship in 2014 and 2015. Those two appearances marked the first two appearances in the NCAA Championship in program history.
In 2014, the Hoosiers finished 11th as a team and were led by the ninth place finish of the 1V4 while the 1V8 finished 10th and the 2V8 came in 14th.
In 2015, Indiana once against finished 11th as a team with the 1V8 leading the way with another 10th place finish while the 2V8 checked in with a 11th place finish and the 1V4 registered a 13th place finish.
