BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – The Big Ten Conference announced the individual award winners for rowing for the 2015-16 season and Indiana senior Rebecca Brougher was named Athlete of the Year as voted by the conference coaches.
Brougher, a native of Columbus, Indiana, is the No. 2 seat in the Varsity 8 crew that will be heading to the NCAA Championships next week in Sacramento, marking the third straight trip to the national championship regatta for the Hoosiers. The 1V8 boat compiled a record of 23-5 during the regular season and then finished fourth at the Big Ten Championships last weekend at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, as Brougher was named First Team All-Big Ten after garnering Second Team honors last year as a junior.
Earlier this spring, Brougher was also named the female recipient of the Spirit of Indiana Director's Award (read more). The award is the most prestigious award handed out at the Spirit of Indiana Showcase and is given to the male and female student-athlete that best represent the Spirt of Indiana: 24 Sports, 1 Team mantra.
Brougher is the first IU rower to be named Big Ten Rowing Athlete of the Year, with current junior Alice Wright the only other athlete to garner and individual honor from the Big Ten when she was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2014.
