RECAPPING 2015 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
Last year at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center, the Hoosiers finished in 11th place as a team for the second consecutive year. The 1V8 crew finished 10th, the 2V8 came in 11th and the 1V4 was 13th.
The 1V8 opened the regatta by finishing third in their opening heat and then came in second in the Repechage later in the day. On day two, the Hoosiers finished sixth in the A/B semifinals to advance to the petite finals the following day. In the petite final, IU topped Princeton and Harvard to take fourth place.
The 2V8 also finished in third place in their opening heat and then crossed the finish line in second place in the Repechage in the afternoon. Also appearing in the A/B semifinals, the Hoosiers took sixth place and moved on to the petite finals. In the petite finals, IU finished fifth, ahead of Virginia.
The 1V4 clocked a fourth place finish in their first race of the Championship and then finished third in the Repechage to close the first day. They moved into the C/D semifinals on day two and finished first by three seconds in that race and then went on to win the C final on the final day of racing.
LOOKING BACK AT 2014 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP – THE FIRST-EVER NCAA APPEARNACE FOR IU
After making waves at the Big Ten Championship with a fourth place finish, the Hoosiers received an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship, the first in program history. Ironically, the NCAA Championship regatta was held at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis.
The 1V8 opened with a third place showing in their opening heat and then came back to finish second in the Repechage later in the day. In the A/B semifinals, Indiana finished sixth and moved on to the petite finals. Their fourth place finish in the petite final gave the Hoosiers a 10th place finish overall.
The 2V8 crew began their NCAA Championship with a fourth place finish in their heat and then came back to take third in the Repechage later. In the C/D semifinals, IU crossed the finish line first to move on to the C final. And in that C final, Indiana finished first with a time of 6:54.735.
And the 1V4 boat claimed third place in their opening heat and then won the Repechage heat later in the day. The next day, in the A/B semifinals, Indiana finished sixth to move on to the Petite final, where they would finish third.
2V8 REACHES PODIUM AT 2016 BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP
For the third year in a row, Indiana finished the Big Ten Championship in fourth place, trailing Ohio State, Michigan and Wisconsin. The top crew performance came from the 2V8, who finished third in their heat to earn the bronze medal. Their time of 6:31.104 was just over one second behind Wisconsin for second place and nearly two seconds ahead of Michigan in fourth.
The 1V8 and 1V4 both finished fourth in their respective final heats to narrowly miss the medal stand.
DALE ENGLAND CUP ENDS IN 3-WAY TIE FOR FIRST
After weather postponed the racing on the first day of the Dale England Cup, the schedule was adjusted so that all four teams – Indiana, Notre Dame, Duke and Navy – would race in the same heat and would go against each other twice on Saturday.
When the dust had settled following the afternoon session of racing, there was a 3-way tie for first place between Indiana, Duke and Notre Dame. The predetermined tiebreaker would be the team with the best combined times in the two 1V8 races. After the times were added up, it was Notre Dame that was declared the winner with IU just 0.85 of a second behind. The Hoosiers won the morning session against the Irish with a time of 6:45.7, just 0:00.3 ahead of Notre Dame. In the afternoon session, the Irish were able to pull ahead at the end and win by 1.1 second.
HOOSIERS HAVE SOLID SHOWING AT CLEMSON INVITATIONAL
Last weekend, the Indiana rowing team traveled to Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C., for one of the largest collegiate regattas in the country. They joined 19 other programs there for two days of high-level racing and came away in solid shape.
The 1V8 opened with a third place finish against No. 3 Virginia and No. 14 Washington State in the first heat and then came back in the afternoon and finished first in their heat, edging out UCLA and Radcliffe. The third session of racing the following day pitted IU against No. 8 Texas and it was the Longhorns that earned the win in the heat with IU finishing second.
VARSITY 8 BOATS OFF TO GOOD START AT BIG TEN/ACC CHALLENGE
On April 2, Indiana played host to Iowa and Louisville at Lake Lemon to start the competitive spring season. In the 1V8 race, it was the Hoosiers that came out on top with a time of 6:42.6 while Iowa was three seconds behind and Louisville was nine seconds behind the Hoosiers.
In the 2V8 race, IU once again crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 6:56.2 while Iowa was second, just two seconds back, and Louisville was three seconds back.
NEW FACES IN NEW PLACES
Following the strong run the last two years, graduation took its toll on the Hoosiers Varsity crews heading into 2015-16.
In the 1V8 boat against Iowa and Louisville, there were just three returning members – Alice Wright, Emily Barber and Rebecca Brougher.
UNPRECEDENTED SUCCESS FOR THE HOOSIERS
The Indiana Rowing program is in the midst of unprecedented success for the program, as they have made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Championship in 2014 and 2015. Those two appearances marked the first two appearances in the NCAA Championship in program history.
In 2014, the Hoosiers finished 11th as a team and were led by the ninth place finish of the 1V4 while the 1V8 finished 10th and the 2V8 came in 14th.
In 2015, Indiana once against finished 11th as a team with the 1V8 leading the way with another 10th place finish while the 2V8 checked in with a 11th place finish and the 1V4 registered a 13th place finish.
