MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Sixteen hits and a pair of two-run home runs helped Indiana baseball (27-16, 12-4) knock off the 19th-ranked Minnesota Gophers, 12-8, on Friday night in game one of a pivotal three-game Big Ten series.
Senior Kyle Hart picked up his 10th victory of the season to keep pace for the nation's lead in the category. He finished with eight strikeouts to go along with eight hits in six innings of work.
Six different Hoosiers collected an RBI, with freshman Ryan Fineman driving in a team-high four runs. Senior Brian Wilhite and junior Craig Dedelow each provided a two-run home run in the effort, while junior Alex Krupa and sophomore Tony Butler each tallied three hits. Sophomore Logan Sowers drove in one, scored twice and had two hits.
The Hoosiers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After Krupa led off the game with a single to center, Dedelow used a double to right-center to put two in scoring position. Krupa scored on a wild pitch, while a sacrifice fly by Fineman pushed Dedelow home. A one-out, two-run home run in the bottom half for Minnesota scored two and evened the score at 2-all.
The Gophers had their first three batters reach safely in the bottom of the second inning en route to a three-run frame, which resulted in Minnesota taking a 5-2 lead off three hits.
Dedelow helped trim the Hoosiers' deficit to one run in the top of the third with a two-run shot to right field that also scored Butler, who singled to lead off the inning. A scoreless bottom of the third led to Indiana utilizing its second two-run ball in as many innings to regain a 6-5 advantage. An initial walk to junior Austin Cangelosi set up Wilhite's eighth home run of the season. Minnesota split two solo home runs between three strikeouts for Hart in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull back ahead, 7-6.
Fineman brought Indiana back in the top of the fifth with and RBI single that plated Sowers, who doubled.
Indiana's offense exploded for five runs in the sixth. Following a walk to Wilhite and single to Butler, Krupa used a single to centerfield to drive the Hoosiers' eighth run of the game. Sowers then snuck a ball through the right side to plate Indiana's second run of the frame. Back-to-back two-out doubles by Fineman and sophomore Isaiah Pasteur scored a combined three runs for a 12-7 lead.
Minnesota got one run back in the sixth before junior Thomas Belcher entered the game for 1.2 innings. With Gophers on the corners and two away in the bottom of the eighth, junior Jake Kelzer came in and needed just one pitch to leave two stranded. He struck out two as part of a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Indiana and Minnesota will face off again tomorrow with first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m ET.
