INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Behind seven second-half saves from freshman goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu and a 78th minute goal from sophomore Caroline Dreher, Indiana Women's Soccer (1-1-1) defeated Butler (1-1-1) on Friday night, 1-0.
The game was delayed more than 75 minutes as lightning moved into the area before the teams had the chance to take the field for warm-ups.
"I don't think we ever went away from the game plan, we were here to play," said head coach Amy Berbary. "We didn't care how long it was going to take, we were ready to go."
L'Hommedieu, who earned eight total saves on the night, was tested early and often to start the second half. Her seven stops were the most for an Indiana goalkeeper in one half since Sarah Stone also notched seven in the second half at Penn State on Oct. 11, 2015.
"I thought tonight she was very composed and engaged in the game," said Berbary. "She came up big for us in the near post in the second half and just continued to stay locked in through the remainder of the game."
In the first 10 minutes coming out of the locker room, Butler put up five shots, including three on goal. The Hudson, Ohio native made back-to-back diving saves as Butler's Breann Pempek fired up a shot in the 49th minute and Serina Kashimoto sent one towards L'Hommedieu in the 50th minute.
On the other end of the field, the Hoosiers looked to get looks of their own as a blocked shot by redshirt sophomore Mykayla Brown in the 58th minute led to a series of Indiana throw ins. However, IU was unable to get another look as a flurry of activity inside the 18-yard box led to the Butler goalkeeper grabbing a loose ball.
Four minutes later, L'Hommedieu picked up one of her more impressive saves as she parried another shot from Pempek over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
Dreher broke the stalemate for the Hoosiers one minute after checking in as she picked up a loose ball and fired from 25 yards out in the 78th minute. The ball nipped a Butler defender, but sailed in just to the left of the keeper. The score was the first of Dreher's career.
Indiana also saw big contributions from freshman Macy Miller, who made her first career start against the Bulldogs. The Carmel, Ind. native fired up a game-high four shots, including an on-target look in the 18th minute.
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday as they play host to Northern Colorado at 1 p.m. Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the game as part of Pups at the Pitch Day.
