Three Goals Power Hoosiers Past Northern Colorado

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer completed a perfect weekend as the Hoosiers scored three goals en route to a 3-0 shutout victory against Northern Colorado on Sunday afternoon.
The offensive output was the highest for Indiana (2-1-1) since a 4-1 victory against George Mason on Sept. 5, 2014.
IU, who earned a 1-0 victory at Butler on Friday, saw second career goals from redshirt sophomore Mykayla Brown and sophomores Cassidy Blacha and Maya Piper. In addition, freshman Sarah L'Hommedieu posted her second consecutive shutout as she picked up six saves in the victory.
"It's really, really hard to complete a weekend in college soccer, especially at our level," said head coach Amy Berbary. "We got the first one on Friday away and I really think the kids took some pride in that. That was our mentality today to have some pride and go ahead and get this one. I really thought we stayed focused from everybody on the bench to the people that were on the field."
Brown put the Hoosiers up early with her goal in the third minute. After a pass from junior Kayla Smith was deflected by a Northern Colorado defender, Brown got control of the ball and flicked it off the near post and into the net. The goal was the first for the Indianapolis native, who sat out the 2015 season with an injury, since her score against George Mason in 2014.
Sophomore Abby Allen nearly netted the second Hoosier goal 10 minutes later as her shot from just outside the 18-yard box was pushed over the crossbar by Northern Colorado (2-1-1) goalkeeper Madeline Burdick.
L'Hommedieu, who made her third career start, collected all three of her first-half saves in the first 20 minutes of action. The Bears' best look in the opening half came in the 20th minute as L'Hommedieu made a diving stop on Thalia Kusulas' shot from 25 yards out.
Indiana did add onto the lead before half as sophomore Caroline Dreher shook off a Northern Colorado defender and found Blacha at the top of the six-yard box. Blacha then tipped it in with her right foot as she was lunging forward to extend Indiana's advantage to 2-0 in the 28th minute.
The biggest test of the day for L'Hommedieu came in the 74th minute as a great look from Brooke Braden was just pushed over the crossbar to keep the shutout intact.
Indiana (15) and Northern Colorado (14) were relatively even in shots, but the Hoosiers held an 10-5 advantage in corner kicks, including 8-3 in the second half. IU cashed in on one of those corners as freshman Meghan Scott served in a perfect ball to Piper, who headed into the center of the net to make it 3-0 in the 71st minute. The assist was the first career point for Scott.
Up next for Indiana is the Hoosier Challenge Cup tournament, which will see IU host LSU on Friday at 3 p.m. and SMU on Monday at 1 p.m. Admission to all Indiana Women's Soccer games is free of charge.
