Hoosiers Win Indiana Invitational
8/27/2016 10:31:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the 10th consecutive season the Hoosiers will have a preseason tournament championship, after taking down Marshall 3-1 (25-21, 17-25, 26-24, 25-21) to capture the Indiana Invitational.
The Hoosiers (3-0) have now won the Indiana Invitational in four consecutive seasons and did so with contributions from a variety of places.
Senior Taylor Lebo became the 17th player in the history of the program to reach 100 aces by serving up five in the match.
Redshirt freshman Kendall Beerman who rehabbed from an ACL injury and did not compete a season ago tallied 34 kills on the weekend and was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Joining Beerman on the All-Tournament Team were Lebo and junior Jessica Leish, who posted 10 kills in the tournament clinching victory over Marshall.
"After redshirting it is so great to take the chance to play," Beerman said. "Playing with this team has been so fun this weekend and we have built great team chemistry. I can't wait to see where we go in the future."
The Hoosiers were tested by the Thundering Herd after Marshall secured a 25-17 win in set two to even the match at one set apiece.
The third set did not go perfectly according to plan for the Hoosiers with Marshall staying with them every step of the way in a set that featured 13 ties, including a 21-21 tie.
The Hoosiers built a 24-21 lead on a kill by freshman Elizabeth Asdell, but Marshall came right back to even the set 24-24.
Indiana forced Marshall into consecutive errors to end the set 26-24 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In set four the Hoosiers had trouble finding separation, but used a .393 hitting efficiency to get into a rhythm and come away with a 25-21 set victory to win the match.
Up next the Hoosiers take the long trek out to California for the San Francisco Invitational, Sept. 2-3.
