BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer dropped a 3-0 decision to LSU in the Hoosier Challenge Cup on Friday afternoon. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Hoosiers.
LSU scored all three goals in a 16-minute span, capped by a penalty kick in the 50th minute of action.
Indiana (2-2-1) started the game aggressively, putting up four shots in the first 15 minutes of play. Freshman Macy Miller was responsible for two of them, both of which were on goal. Her best look came on an opportunity just a step inside the 18-yard box as LSU goalkeeper Caroline Brockmeier just got her fingertips on it to send towards the crossbar.
"We started out with the first 15-20 minutes on fire," said Indiana head coach Amy Berbary. "The difference in the game here today was they had seven shots on goal, they scored three. We had six, we scored zero. Great teams like this, when you have them on their heels, you have to be able to put one away to settle the game down and we just didn't do that."
The Tigers (2-3-0) found the back of the net in the 34th minute as Jorian Baucom headed in a long cross from Gabriela Maldonado on what would prove to be the gamewinner.
Just before half, LSU added onto its lead as Caitlin Cantrill picked up a rebound on a Maldonado shot and knocked it into the upper corner of the far post in the 44th minute.
The final Tiger score came after LSU's Delaney Sheehan was tripped up in the box, allowing Baucom the opportunity to pick up her second goal of the day on a successful penalty kick conversion.
Indiana looked to get on the board late as freshman Chandra Davidson and sophomore Cassidy Blacha each put up on-target looks. However, Brockmeier was there to make the saves.
IU freshman goalkeeper Sarah L'Hommedieu suffered her first loss on the year and finished the game with a trio of saves.
Up next, the Hoosiers return to Bill Armstrong Stadium on Monday to host SMU at 1 p.m. in the final game of the Hoosier Challenge Cup.
"We can't do anything about this game so right now it's all about focusing on our next game," said redshirt senior Marissa Borschke. "As much as we can learn from it, we have to have a short-term memory and just move on to focus on SMU coming up."
Monday's game will be Military Appreciation Day as IU Women's Soccer says thank you to service members. All Indiana home games are free of admission.
