Split Weekend Features Hoosiers at Home on BTN

Indiana will play their Big Ten home opener before playing their second MAC opponent away from home
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers, having weathered the test of their Big Ten opener at Maryland and their first true road game against a top-20 team at Delaware, will aim for a return to the win column this weekend.
"We have to rebound from last weekend, in terms of our conference play," said head coach Amanda Janney. "We know we have to win games to make the postseason, so this Rutgers game is huge for us. We have to get back to our kind of game--we played a lot of fantastic field hockey last weekend, but we weren't able to finish with a win. So we have to make sure that we're starting off stronger, playing from ahead rather than from behind."
The Hoosiers' Big Ten home opener against Rutgers will be their only regular season game airing live for a national audience on the Big Ten Network. Sunday's trip to Mount Pleasant will be the first meeting between the Hoosiers and Chippewas since the 2012 season. The weekend slate versus Rutgers (9/23) and at Central Michigan (9/25) begins a three-weekend series where the Hoosiers open on Friday against the Big Ten and close their Sunday with an out-of-conference matchup.

Hoosier Notes:
East Coast Examination
Indiana returns to Bloomington after a weekend on the east coast against formidable competition, playing two top-15 teams in a 24-hour span. The Hoosiers began with their Big Ten opener, No. 7 Maryland, who scored two late goals to put away an otherwise close battle in College Park. The next day, No. 12 Delaware hosted the Hoosiers in a high-scoring affair, with the Blue Hens winning 5-4. Delaware held a 4-0 lead at halftime before holding off a valiant comeback bid from Indiana.
Top of the Charts
Indiana senior Kate Barber is off to a flying start after four weeks of the field hockey season. Through eight games, Barber is the nation's scoring leader with 12 goals, and ranks first in goals per game (1.50). Furthermore, Barber ranks second in the NCAA and the Big Ten in points per game (3.38), trailing only Michigan State's Kendal Anderson (3.57).
"She's just such a team leader," Janney said of the national scoring leader. "To see her recognized on the scoreboard is great for her, because I know how hard she works outside of game day. We're not too surprised, because we see all these goals she scores in practice and how hard she hustles and works in every practice session. It's also nice that she's not only scoring from corners; she's threatening in the field as well. It's been great to see her mentality change, when she knows she needs to get something done for the team, that she can make it happen."
Two additional Hoosiers, Mollie Getzfread and Maddie Latino, rank in the top ten of the national assists averages. The pair are tied for sixth, having both served seven assists (0.88/game).
Scouting the Scarlet Knights
For the second season in a row, Indiana will host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights for a BTN showdown at the IU Field Hockey Complex. The Scarlet Knights lead the overall series, 4-1, but the series is tied 1-1 since Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2014. The Hoosiers earned a 2-0 shutout win in last year's senior day game, with goals from Kate Barber and 2015 senior Sydney Supica.
Rutgers brings the NCAA's second-ranked scoring offense (4.71 goals/game) to Bloomington this weekend, led by freshman Nikki Santore (6 goals, 4 assists). Friday's game at Indiana is their first Big Ten game of the 2016 season.
Fired Up for the Chips
The Hoosiers make their second foray into a Mid-American Conference road environment this Sunday, when they head to Mount Pleasant to face the Central Michigan Chippewas. The series lead goes to Indiana, 6-1, with the Hoosiers taking the last six matchups. The meeting is the first between the teams in four seasons.
The Chippewas are 1-6 on the year, their lone win coming in a 2-1 overtime game versus Quinnipiac. They will host Miami (Ohio) for their conference opener on Friday before playing Indiana.
Hoosier Reunion
Awaiting the Hoosiers in their Sunday game at Central Michigan is 2015 Indiana graduate Sydney Supica, who recently joined the Chippewas' coaching staff as a graduate assistant. Supica was a two-time All-Big Ten and NFCA All-West Region honoree. In the backfield for Indiana, Supica set the top three single-season defensive save totals and IU's career defensive save record (23).
Worth Noting...
• Goalkeeper Noëlle Rother ranks second in the Big Ten in saves per game (4.75) and fifth in save percentage (.667).
• Kate Barber is five goals away from matching Indiana's single-season goal record (17), set by Lydia Schrott in 2005.
• Indiana's game on Friday is "Club Team Day" at the IU Field Hockey complex, inviting all of Indiana's club athletic teams to join the Crimson Guard in creating a raucous game day atmosphere on BTN.
