BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University men's tennis team (2-0) will open their home schedule with three matches this weekend versus the Ball State Cardinals (1-2) on Friday at 6 PM, Eastern Illinois Panthers (0-2) on Saturday at 11 AM, and the Illinois-Chicago Flames (0-2) on Saturday at 3 PM. All three matches will be played in the IU Tennis Center.
Last weekend, the Hoosiers went to Hanover, N.H., and came away with a 4-0 victory over Bryant and a 6-1 win over Dartmouth.
In singles against Bryant, the Hoosiers got wins from freshmen Bennett Crane, Zac Brodney and senior Stefan Lugonjic. The doubles point was secured by the teams of sophomore's Oliver Sec/Afonso Salgado, sophomore Antonio Cembellin/Lugonjic, and Brodney/Crane.
Against Dartmouth, junior's Keivon Tabrizi and Raheel Manji won a decisive match to give the Hoosiers the doubles point. In singles, IU got wins from Manji, Tabrizi, Cembellin, Crane, and Brodney.
This weekend, first up for the Hoosiers are the Cardinals, whom played a tough opening weekend against Purdue and Notre Dame.
"I think Ball State will definitely be a challenge for us," IU head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "They've played a tough schedule already and they have some very good players on their team. We are focusing on that match first and trying to prepare as much for that match as we can. We are excited it's going to be at home and we get to play three matches."
On Saturday, the Hoosiers face a Panthers team that fell to St. Louis and Ball State last weekend. The Hoosiers finish off the weekend with the Flames, whom lost to Depaul and Western Michigan two weekends ago.
Last season, the Hoosiers posted an 8-2 record on their home courts, a place where Wurtzman feels IU is comfortable.
"We try to get as many fans out as we can," Wurtzman said. "It makes it a little bit smoother going into the match with our preparation."
Three matches in two days can take a toll, but the Hoosiers have worked all year long to prepare for these type of battles.
"A lot of guys are training and not taking time off. Physically, we'll be fine," Wurtzman said.
To walk away from the weekend with a 5-0 record, Wurtzman says the Hoosiers must have a great mindset going into each match and be disciplined.
On Friday, fans will get free pizza from Pizza X and on Saturday, fans can grab a 2016-17 IU men's tennis schedule poster.
