BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer dropped a 3-1 contest to Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Redshirt junior Mykayla Brown put the Hoosiers on the board in the 89th minute, but the Fighting Illini held on for the victory.
The loss moved the Hoosiers to 5-6-2 on the year with a 1-3-1 Big Ten mark. Illinois improved to 4-10 with a 1-5 conference record.
Indiana held an 11-8 shot advantage, but Illinois goalkeeper Jaelyn Cunningham notched six saves in the contest.
"They buried the chances they had and executed in the final third," said head coach Amy Berbary. "I don't we think we started to generate much offense until the last 10-12 minutes of the first half. That's something in this league that is unacceptable for us and we have to fix that."
Kara Marbury put Illinois on top in the 26th minute as Patricia George cross the ball in from the right and Marbury slotted it in past Hoosier goalkeeper Bethany Kopel.
Shots from redshirt freshman Emma Kershner and freshman Melanie Forbes were sent in on target late in the first half, but both were saved to send the Hoosiers into the lockerroom with a 1-0 deficit.
Sophomore Meghan Scott fired in a look in the 54th minute from outside the box, but Cunningham dove up to tip it over the crossbar.
Just 10 minutes later, Scott once again looked to equalize as she took a free kick and sent it in towards goal to a diving Cunningham.
The Fighting Illini all but put the game out reach as they netted a pair of goals within five minutes late in the game to extend the advantage to 3-0. Kelly Maday found the back of the net in the 82nd minute as she picked up a cross sent in by Morgan Maroney and Cunningham. Marbury scored her second goal of the game in the 87th minute as a shot from 23 yards out.
Brown's second goal of the season came off the assist of sophomore Chandra Davidson, who sent the ball in from the right and Brown flicked it in with just over a minute remaining in the contest.
Up next, the Hoosiers head north as they face Minnesota on Friday night before visiting Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon. Both games will be broadcast on BTN Plus.
"We don't hang our hat on this game," said Berbary. "I don't question this team's effort, heart or willingness to win. What I question is 'what are we doing collectively as a group to get it done?' Everybody wants to win, but what are you going to about it? The opportunities ahead of us in the next six games are incredible and can change our season. But we have to use this as a learning tool and get back to work on Tuesday."
