CARMEL, Indiana – Indiana freshman Evan Yakubov, who is competing as an individual only, used a second round 68 to propel himself up the leaderboard all the way to a tie for first at 5-under par through 36 holes of the Crooked Stick Invitational. The tournament is being played at the prestigious Crooked Stick Golf Club near Indianapolis.
As a team, Indiana opened with a disappoint score of 305 in round one but shaved 20 shots off that total to post a score of 285 in round two to sit in eighth place after two rounds. The score of 285 is the Hoosiers best this season on a par 72 course and the fourth-best score overall on the year.
Entering this week's tournament, Yakobov's best 18-hole score for the year was a 72 in the first round last week at the Windon Memorial. He bettered that with both rounds on Monday at Crooked Stick. In round one, Yakubov was steady throughout and finished with 15 pars, two birdies and one bogey on his way to a 71. Then in round two, he opened with a bogey on his first hole – the 18th hole. But he rolled in a 40-foot birdied putt on the very next hole and that set the table for a 31 on the front nine that featured six birdies and a bogey. He closed the back nine with six pars, one birdie and one bogey to post 68 and tie Timmy Hildebrand from Purdue for the individual lead at 5-under par.
Joining Yakubov with an outstanding opening day was redshirt junior Jake Brown, who is tied for third after rounds of 73 and 67 put him at 4-under par and a tie for third place. Including the three rounds at the Windon Memorial last week, Brown has carded scores of 68-69-72-73-67 in his last five rounds.
On Monday, Brown began his day with an up-and-down front nine that featured four birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. He would go on to play the back nine in 2-over par to finish with a score of 73. Then things changed in round two, and he caught fire around the greens. He logged five birdies and zero bogeys on his way to a 67.
Sophomore Brock Ochsenreiter is tied for 21st after rounds of 77 and 69 leave him at 2-over par through the first two rounds. In the first round, Ochsenreiter was never able to get it rolling on the greens and made six bogeys to just one birdie. But in round two, he rolled in five birdies to just two bogeys.
Freshman Ethan Shepherd began his day with a quadruple but followed it up with a birdie two holes later. He would go on to par each of his next 14 holes before another big number got him on his final hole of the day – a triple bogey – and give him a score of 78 in round one. Shepherd was cruising along at even par through 15 holes in round two before a pair of bogeys put him at 8-over par following a 74 in round two.
Brendon Doyle and Jack Sparrow are both tied for 51st at 9-over par after two rounds. Doyle carded scores of 77 and 76 while Sparrow opened with a 78 and followed with a 75 in round two.
The Hoosiers also have two others competing as individuals in addition to Yakubov. Trevor Ranton is tied for 57th at 11-over par following score of 81 and 74. Sophomore Evan Gaesser is tied for 64th at 19-over par with scores of 82 and 81 on his ledger.
The Hoosiers will tee off on No. 10 at 9:00 a.m. in Tuesday's final round. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com.
