
Cross Country Hosts B1G Championships On Sunday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University will host the 2017 Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Sunday, October 29 at the IU Championship Cross Country Course. The event welcomes nationally and regionally ranked teams in the U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Poll. There will be 12 men's teams and 14 women's teams will compete for the B1G title.
The Hoosiers will have great competition including Michigan (men 13th, women tenth), Michigan State (men 15th, women 20th), Minnesota (men 18th, women 19th), Penn State (men 30th, women ninth) and Wisconsin (women 17th).
The men's 8K race will begin at 10:45 a.m. EST and the women's 6K race will begin at 11:45 a.m. EST. The B1G Championships will air on the Big Ten Network on delay on Monday, October 30 at 8:30 p.m. EST. The event will also be available for viewing on BTN2Go after it airs on BTN.
The Hoosier men team last won the Big Ten Championships in 2013 at Purdue with a total of 51 points. Zach Mayhew, 2012, was the last individual champion with the time of 23:29. Last season, the men's team finished third overall with a score of 92. The came in behind Wisconsin (63) and Michigan State (66).
The Hoosiers have three runners from last season returning to compete in the Big Ten Championships again. Sophomore Ben Veatch will be the fastest returning IU athlete. Veatch finished eighth overall as a freshman, which earned him Second-Team All-Big Ten honors. Also returning to the Big Ten Championships will be redshirt sophomore Kyle Mau who finished 37th and redshirt sophomore Bryce Millar who finished 41st.
The men's team will be rounded out by redshirt junior Kyle Burks who was the second IU runner to cross the finish line at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, redshirt junior Joe Murphy, redshirt freshman Teddy Browning, redshirt freshman Cameron Clements and redshirt freshman Marcus Ellington.
The Hoosier women team last won the Big Ten Championships back-to-back in 1989 at Wisconsin with a total of 47 points and 1990 at Minnesota with a total of 37 points. Michelle Dekkers was the last IU athlete to be an individual champion, when she earned three straight titles from 1988-90. Last season, the women's team finished eighth overall with a score of 171.
The Hoosiers have six runners from last season returning to compete in the Big Ten Championships again this season. Redshirt junior Katherine Receveur is the fastest returning IU athlete. Receveur crossed second overall last season as a redshirt sophomore, which earned her First-Team All-Big Ten honors. Also returning to the Big Ten Championships will be redshirt junior Brenna Calder who finished 22nd overall, junior Maggie Allen, junior Haley Harris, sophomore Lexa Barrott and sophomore Grace Walther.
The women's team will be rounded out by redshirt sophomore Kelsey Harris and redshirt freshman Stacy Morozov.
The awards ceremony will begin at the conclusion of the women's race promptly at 12:30 p.m. EST. The team with the lowest point total will be crowned the title of 2017 Big Ten Champions. Individually, the top seven runners in both the men's and women's race will be named First-Team All-Big Ten honors. The next seven runners (finishers right through 14) will earn Second-Team All-Big Ten honors.
Admission to the event is free. Parking will be $10, cash only. There will be Championship merchandise available for purchase, cash only. Pets are prohibited from the course on event day.
