NEWARK, N.J. – The Hoosiers dropped their first road game of the season in the Gavitt Tipoff Games, 84-68, to No. 23 Seton Hall. The Hoosiers (1-2) had a battle going with the Pirates (3-0) after one half, but Seton Hall's quick return and 23 free throw attempts in the second half prevailed.
Senior guard Robert Johnson scored a layup in the first half that made him Indiana's 51st 1,000-point scorer in program history and the first Hoosier to achieve the feat since James Blackmon Jr. (1/10/17). After a 12-point night, Johnson passed Jared Jeffries to rank 50th on Indiana's all-time scoring leaderboard (1,011).
The Hoosiers found four players in double figures on the scoreboard for the second game in a row, led by 16 from Devonte Green. Johnson's dozen followed Green, along with 10 points apiece from freshmen Justin Smith and Aljami Durham.
Juwan Morgan totaled eight points with a team-leading seven rebounds while providing reliability on the defensive end. Josh Newkirk also scored eight points but didn't miss a shot, going 3-for-3 with a trio of assists.
Indiana matched Seton Hall in points off turnovers at 21 points apiece, and both teams scored 11 second-chance points from nine offensive rebounds.
Indiana completed a 7-0 scoring run with 12 minutes left in the first half, cutting Seton Hall's lead to one score. Green scored a 3-pointer and dished an assist on one of Smith's two buckets during the run.
The Hoosiers went on another scoring run, 14-6, to close the half and push one point away from tying the score. Green drained two 3-pointers while Johnson and Durham rolled layups off the glass.
Green led the Hoosiers through the first half with 12 points and hit 4-of-5 shots behind the arc. Indiana forced six turnovers in the last seven minutes of the period and scored 17 points off turnovers in the half.
The Pirates launched into the second half with a scoring run to retain a double-digit lead until the end of the contest. Johnson went point-for-point with the Pirates for a stretch late in the second half, hitting three layups with another inside score by Morgan.
The Hoosiers return to Bloomington this weekend as they resume the Hoosier Tip-Off Classic in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Sunday, November 19. Indiana and South Florida (2-1) will tip at 6:00 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
