BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 1-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions, 1-0, in overtime on Monday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
Redshirt junior Cory Thomas netted the golden goal in the 97th minute for the Hoosiers off the assist from freshman Griffin Dorsey. With the victory, Indiana improves to 14-0-4 on the season overall, while Penn State's season comes to an end with a mark of 5-10-2.
The Hoosier defense and freshman goalkeeper Trey Muse recorded the team's 14th shutout of the season – the most in the NCAA. The 14 blank sheets are the most in a season for IU since 2001 (16).
After a slow start, the Hoosiers offense got rolling in the middle of the first period. Penn State had the match's first shot, only to see IU take the next 15. Despite the advantage in shots, the match reached halftime scoreless.
The offensive onslaught continued for Indiana in the second half, as the team out-shot the Nittany Lions, 17-4, in the frame. After getting six shots on-goal in the first 45 minute, IU had seven on-frame in the second. After 90 minutes, the teams remained even.
Finally, in overtime, the breakthrough came for IU on the team's 34th shot of the afternoon. Working on the right side, Dorsey made a great run in to the 18-yard box, finding Thomas in space. The redshirt junior collected himself and cracked a great shot, beating the PSU keeper to the far-left post, giving IU the victory.
The goal was Thomas' fifth of the season, while Dorsey recorded his team-leading sixth assist of the year.
For the game, Indiana out-shot the Nittany Lions, 34-5, getting 14 shots on-goal to none for PSU. Corner kicks were 12-2 in favor of the Hoosiers.
Indiana's 34 shots were a season-high and the most for the team since taking 36 in a 2-0 victory over IUPUI on Sept. 20, 2016. Freshman Mason Toye took 11 shots for IU on Monday, setting a school Big Ten Tournament record. His 11 shots are tied for the second-most in school history overall, one behind Will Bruin's mark of 12 set in 2010.
The No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers will face the No. 6-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Friday, Nov. 10 at 2:30 p.m. ET at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind. The match will be televised nationally on the Big Ten Network.
