Surprise, Ariz. – Indiana Baseball (1-1) dropped its season opener, 1-0, to the seventh-ranked Oregon State Beavers on Friday afternoon before turning around to hand the Gonzaga Bulldogs a 12-3 loss to finish off an opening day double header.
Game 1
The lone score of the game came with the help of a throwing error in the sixth inning. An initial single by Stevan Kwan gave way for Christian Donahue to deliver an RBI double to right-center field.
Indiana edged out Oregon State 5-4 in hits, with both Ryan Fineman and Laren Eustace delivering two-hit performances.
In his fifth career start, sophomore Jonathan Stiever tossed a three-hitter over the course of 5.2 innings, while retiring nine-straight.
Indiana drew up an early chance in the third inning with Eustace and Jeremy Houston using an infield single and walk to put two on. Senior Alex Krupa pushed both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, but Oregon State's Luke Heimlich worked out of the jam, retiring the next two batters he faced.
Eustace and Houston frustrated Heimlich again in the fifth inning with the duo reaching base off single and walk. Eustace swiped his second base in as many attempts before Houston worked the free pass. The pair would be stranded, keeping the game scoreless through five innings.
Indiana chased Heimlich from the game in the sixth inning with two away. Ryan Fineman found his way to second base following a single to left field and a throwing error. Tony Butler followed with a hit-by-pitch before Oregon State's Jake Thompson entered the game to pick up the final out of the frame.
A single and throwing error helped the Beavers earn the game's first run in the sixth inning. Pauly Milto came into a bases loaded jam and forced a fielder's choice to strand three.
Indiana found a chance in the ninth inning but wouldn't be able to capitalize. Fineman led off with a single and was replaced by Scotty Bradley at first. Tony Butler's groundout advanced Bradley into scoring position with one away.
Game Two
Indiana outmatched Gonzaga with 14 hits to the Bulldogs' 9. The offensive surge was led by Fineman's three-hit afternoon, while two-hit games by Eustace and Jake Matheny and Matt Lloyd rounded out Indiana's multi-hit production. Matheny drove in two runs off his first collegiate home run before repeating it with his second home run coming in the ninth inning. Eustace and Colby Stratten also grabbed multiple RBIs in the contest.
Five innings earned Tim Herrin the win in his first collegiate start. He mixed seven hits with three strikeouts and allowed just one run (unearned).
Four hits in the fourth inning gave way to the Hoosiers putting up two runs. Back-to-back singles from Eustace and Matt Lloyd put two on for Sowers, who singled to left for an RBI. Fineman followed with a single of his own to make it a 2-0 game.
A single by Eustace and a walk by Butler put two on for Matt Llyod, who plated both runners off a two-out base hit to centerfield, upping Indiana's lead to 4-0 in the fifth. Matheny's first collegiate home run came the following inning and scored Fineman, whose infield single put one on for Matheny's blast to left field.
Craig Dedelow gunned down Gunnar Schubert at the plate in the bottom half of the frame with a throw from left field, which left two runners on base. An unearned run in the sixth broke Indiana's shutout.
The Hoosiers' bats continued to trouble the Bulldogs in the seventh, as Indiana put up a four-spot, with the help of four hits, including a triple by Eustace and a two-run single by Stratten.
Indiana plated two final runs in the top of the ninth on Matheny's second round-tripper, while Gonzaga loaded the bases with one out in the final frame to push across two runs.
Indiana resumes play in Surprise, Ariz., on Sunday with a 3:30 p.m. ET meeting with Gonzaga before closing out with Oregon State again on Monday.
