SURPRISE, Ariz. – Indiana baseball (2-1) made it two-straight over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (2-2) with a 5-1 victory on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Jeremy Houston led the Hoosiers with two hits and two RBI, while freshman Jake Matheny, senior Tony Butler and junior Logan Sowers provided Indiana's other three runs. Senior Alex Krupa also added two hits.
Freshman Andrew Saalfrank went four innings in his collegiate debut, striking out three batters to go along with four hits and one run allowed. Junior Kade Kryzsko went 1.2 innings in relief and picked up the win, while junior B.J. Sabol went 2.1 innings, struck out three and held Gonzaga to one hit.
Three-straight walks gave way to a two-run first inning for the Hoosiers. With two outs, sophomore Scotty Bradley drew the inning's fourth walk, which scored junior Laren Eustace. Butler then drove a single through the left side to plate sophomore Matt Lloyd.
The Bulldogs tested Saalfrank in the fourth inning with a leadoff single and walk, but the lefty forced three-straight outs. Indiana then pushed across its third run in the bottom half of the inning, as Houston's double to left field scored Krupa, who beat out an infield single.
Gonzaga used a leadoff double to bring the score within two runs, 3-1, in the fifth inning. Kryzsko entered the game in relief of Saalfrank and held the Bulldogs to just one run and stranded two runners with an unassisted groundout to Bradley at first.
Two-out hitting upped Indiana's lead to 4-1 in the fifth. Senior Craig Dedelow singled to right field before scoring on Matheney's RBI double to left-center field.
Senior Austin Cangelosi pinch hit for Krupa in the sixth inning and doubled to centerfield, which set up Houston to drive him in on an RBI single to left field, pushing Indiana's lead to four runs, 5-1.
Sabol, who entered the game with two outs in the fifth inning, retired the side in the sixth and held Gonzaga hitless entering the eighth frame. A single and walk put two on for Gonzaga in the eighth, but back-to-back fly outs stranded two.
Indiana ends its time in Arizona tomorrow with a 1 p.m. ET tilt against the seventh-ranked Oregon State Beavers.
